Why You're Getting Wind Noise ...

Honestly going to GoPro 4 with Sena backpack has worked for me. The only issue I have is the Sena 20s won't provide sound from the GPS or Music while hooked to the backpack so if I want to vlog I have to stop and turn it on and when done have to stop and turn off. Minor inconvenience, can't find the 5/6/7 mic adapter so was really my only choice. I need to work on the wife's mic though as I can hear wind when riding over intercom but never hear any in my vlogs.

So what is the best microphone to get to plug into a sony or gopro camera (mic adapter) - that's essentially a 'plug and play'? I don't want the functions, or the expense, of a Sena communicator etc.

I use cheap voip mics off Amazon:

They don't last forever, but are cheap, so I buy a few at a time and swap them out when they break. Generally the more expensive the microphone, the worse it will work in a in helmet setup as they are designed to be lapel or desk mics and are too sensitive to have by our mouths in a helmet. The cheap ones are less sensitive, so don't clip or distort as badly.

That is what I have found anyways.

I have the sena boom mic in my HJC and then in my 2 voss helmets I have purple panda mics setup. Which are great but seems like pretty sensitive for gopro

I am brand new to vlogging and my first attempt went well minus...my audio. I as using a Purple Panda into a Sony PX-312. After messing with settings on the Sony I got what I consider to be really decent audio. I am interested in feedback on my first attempt. I will get it up on the site soon.

FWIW, I have done multiple audio tests (see my channel's "Moto Vlog Gear Setup" playlist for those with half helmets (should work similarly with 3/4 helmets).

A lapel mic can be used, but works best in conjunction with a faired motorcycle, slower speeds, and some clever placement. My latest videos are really quite good in my opinion, especially given my particular setup.

I may try to obtain a SENA 20s mic over the winter and try it out in the same setup to see if it's any better, thanks for the tips!

I know this thread is going on 4 years old, but ahh! Seeing the diagrams, I think my Mic got twisted up at some point and is now pointing in the direction of the wind, causing excessive wind noise to appear on some newer videos I have been working on. Thanks for posting this!

Looking for my first complete setup . Shopping components now. Curious if there are any updates or better options available since the last post on this in 2020?

I'm still using a Purple Panda mic going into the Media Mod on my helmet-mounted GoPro. And some plugins to handle audio processing in Davinci Resolve. Sounds great. YMMV.

The set up really all depends on your helmet camera choice primarily, that is if you want to record direct to the camera.
But most of what has been posted is still relevant, just each manufacturer will have newer cameras now.

I'm currently leaning towards an Action 4 for helmet or bar-mounted / rearward facing camera and an Insta360. I've really enjoyed the additional perspectives offered on the videos I've watched with the 360 cameras. I don't want to do just another "talking helmet cam" setup.

That is fair enough mate, I was not meaning to put you off it, but a lot of people start off wanting to get a channel going, spend a fortune on kit, then find they get bored of the editing and give up after a couple of months. If you already know what you want to be making, then go for it :-)

My only feedback on the DJI 4 is the lens. It has more fish-eye than the latest GoPro cameras, and when used in wide angles it looks a bit derp with lots of left/right turning when used as a handheld, so I'd suggest a narrower field of view if using it in that way or on bike facing you, and only use the wider FOV when it is on helmet :-)

No worries. I enjoy spending time in front of the computer. I enjoy CAD/CAM work and I also enjoyed the time I spent editing the audio of a podcast I was a part of. I used to spend hours editing photos of motorcycle parts I sold on eBay. I realize those items are not exactly the same thing, but I think video editing will suit my meticulous nature.

I was also considering the Insta360 Ace but I read the focal length on the Insta was longer, at 2-3 feet. Probably fine for a bar mount, but potentially too short. It seemed the DJI might be better suited for that use as well as potential "working on bikes" videos if I wanted close-ish video. Aside from image quality I haven't come across anything to convince me to go with the GoPro product.

I have to admit, I am a bit of a GoPro fan-boi, and have had mostly good luck with their cameras. I had a 7 and a 9 which were unreliable, but the 5 Session, 5, 6, 8 & 10 Black were (and the 10 still is) trouble free. I'll not swap from the 10 until it breaks as it does all I need it to, but I do get others frustrations with the brand... although I do think most of those issues are memory card related or battery related.
I have an Insta360 One X2 and a Go2, great cameras, I just can't really be bothered to use them currently... I know I should, and doing so does help a bit in editing if transitioning to different locations between speaking on a ride.
