What Action Camera You Have, What Do You Want, What Did You Have?

can you not get a non gopro mic adaptor for your 4?
Yes but they're tricky. GoPro put a resistor in the wiring that third party adapters do not have. There are instructional videos out there on how to solder your own resistor into a generic adaptor but I honestly don't feel like doing that (lazy?). With most action cams being in a similar retail price range, looking around may be a good option.

Oh I forgot another camera that I'm about to begin using. I bought a Samsung gear 360 cam a few months ago ($50 with purchase of a galaxy S8). Wanted to get that going this weekend on the dashboard. Looking forward to adding this view to my videos. Separate ones of course

  • Main camera is

On E1 Helmet: GoPro Session 5

On Shoei GT Air: Drift Ghost S

Second angle (attached to the bike) is Hero 3 Black with Sena Audio Pack for when I'm filming with the Session.

  • Camera I want
Hero 4 Black so if I want to use the footage from the second camera it will be 4K

  • I own a shit load of camera gear as filming stuff was part of my job so I have about 7 other action cameras and a load of different accessories but you can never have too many gadgets.

Drift Ghost HD so far, but just gone for the 4K version for the stabilising mainly.
I like to carry my Hero4 Black for off bike snippets and if it's decent weather sometimes take Mavic Pro drone.
The Ghost HD has been good since about 2013 but resolution just isn't as good as gopro or indeed DJI - but I hate having the GoPro on helmet.

Main Camera -

Sena Prism Tube

For $100-120, it's got a great "bang for the buck." Very durable, decent quality (1080/30). It can rotate in the holder, so sometimes the video is off kilter. Mic is decent, but doesn't have good noise cancellation (meaning wind is a killer)

Camera I want -

An updated Sena Prism Tube. Maybe something in the 1080/60 or 4k range. Better mic. Maybe a little more in options/setup. The files are numeric, and the date/time is not something that can be adjusted (that I can figure out). Would love for it to be date/time based. Would make it easier to figure out which files are which when putting together videos. And in premiere, it can get confusing if there are several PRIX0003 files to work with.

I also have a Faux Pro (GoPro knock off). It's supposedly 4k, but I use the 1080/30 format so it coincides better with the Sena. I use it to do cuts back and forth. Gives me more flexibility when editing out unwanted audio/video. Not as jarring to clip out the filler words. And sometimes I can piece together clips from different rides without making a bunch of jump cuts.

Currently using a Drift Ghost S. Has the best mounting system for mounting on the side of my helmet. Battery is also a good point. Not to mention the included back cover for the mic and chatgring port.

Used to use an SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi with my old helmet mounted on the top (uses the Go Pro mounts). Looked like a telly tubby but didn't mind as it was easily seen. When I went to use it with my current helmet I was going to have to use a bunch of joints. Do sometimes use at as a rear view camera but mostly it sides in a case next to my desk.

As for what I want there isn't anything really.

Main Camera -
GoPro Hero3+ Silver - It WAS a good camera but has had lot's of abuse attached to the bike even in the housing. I have noticed lots of focus issues now, and I am not impressed with the bitrate for recording moving scenes.
My backup is my Samsung S7 which is actually better than the GoPro but I lack the mounting hardware right now.
Camera I want -
After waiting on the Hero6 and it's a bust IMHO I am back to looking at a pair of Yi 4K+ cameras and my Samsung S7. Since I want to continue to shoot multiple angles a multi camera setup is in my near future.
I might never publish in 4K but the flexibility it gives me during the edit and the fine detail at converted 1080p have me sold on this new hardware.

I am currently using a sena prism tube, mainly until I learn more about editing and youtube. I am slow about learning this..
The next camera I am currently looking into is the sony FDRX3000R...pretty good chance I am going to buy this..

I pulled the trigger this morning..I ordered the sony fdr-x3000r video camera...the mic I ordered is on "backorder" sony #ecm-ds70p so, I will order a cheap-o mic to get me by until it gets here. I'm planning a new video but I wont film until I have the new equipment..with the filmora editing program I should be able to make some decent videos...thanks for your help!

I got my Sony FDR-X3000 yesterday,,It will take me a while to learn this thing, I cant even set the correct time yet..I get frustrated easy...I did shoot a little video of garbage but I don't really know what the settings are, I will keep messing with it until I get it..

With the Sony do you have to buy a mount system separately?
There seems to be a few concerns online about this, and mounts in general.
I have been tempted by it but not keen on the whiteness, or the bulky housing for waterproofing.
Also past experience with Sony having over-priced accessories and being less mainstream there are no 3rd party options (batteries?)

The mounting system was part of the "package" and the water proof casing is a lot slimmer than the go-pro, that's part of the reason I bought it, its more aero for helmet mounting..not like a flat hand in the wind..image stabilization is a lot better than go pro too...it came with a lot of mounting options..99% of the reviews on youtube was a better camera than go pro..it's tiny..looks smaller in person than pictures show..

I have a really old GoPro Hero that only shoots 720. It's OK, but I am eyeing the Hero 6 pretty hard. I will probably only shoot 1080/60, but I am most interested in the better dynamic range and the stabilization. My videos could REALLY use that!!!
I saw that the price was dropped to $450 during Thanksgiving, so I assume it will drop again close to Christmas. I might just ask Mrs santa for a new toy this year... ;)

If going with GoPro, and only going 1080 60 just get a 5, the 6 does nothing better than the 5 except fps and GoPro have nerfed the external mic facility so you can't one-touch record.... even on the 5 you have to revert firmware to a previous version to allow it to work. The 6 won't allow you to do that!

I hear you, but I am MOST interested in the increased dynamic range and the better image stabilization.

is the image stabilisation better than the 5?

And more importantly, no one really uses or should use image stabilisation when helmet mounting anyway... so is it worth the extra money? If bike mounting or using it as a handheld then stabilisation is def worth it.... but in that situation the Sony is far far better! :-)

I don't own one yet, but based on the comparison vids I've watched it performs better than the 5. Plus the increased dynamic range! Trust me, if I thought the 5 would make me happy then I would rather save the $, but the 6 seems to shine brightest in the areas where I am looking.

Main Camera: GoPro Hero 4 Black
It seems to capture both light and dark footage very well. Hippo-drones actually commented on it's ability to capture night footage. Frankly I just plug it in and record. I honestly don't think I've actually messed with the settings aside form change the view to wide angle.
Camera I want: Actually I'm not sure. Another Hero 4 would be nice to have so I can have a self facing camera. The GoPro Cameras have proven to be quite versatile and not to expensive. (If you don't get the latest model of course.)
