Definitely second what MOTOB34R said. I use Freemusicarchove a lot myself. It’s a great site. Obtaining the rights of copyrighted music is a two step process in that the motovlogger needs to obtain the Master Rights from the record label, and then the Synch Rights from the musician/band themselves.

This link can explain more,

https://sonymusiclicensing.com/

(Click the begin browsing button, then the Licensing 101 FAQ link.

What is Music Licensing?
Music licensing grants the rights to use copyrighted music recordings within films, television programs, commercials, video games and other visual mediums. To license a piece of music for a project, rights need to be secured from two separate entities. We (the record company) control the master rights (the actual recording of the music). The music publisher controls the composition (the written song) and negotiates on behalf of the writers for the synchronization rights. Licenses must be secured from both parties. To secure the Master use license for one of Sony Music's tracks, please submit a request through this website. For your convenience, we have provided the publisher's details within the information section for each track. However, since we do not control these rights, you must obtain them separately from the publishers. You should also confirm the publishing information when you contact them to get the rights. If you find the publisher information incomplete or missing, you can also obtain the information by contacting ASCAP, BMI or SESAC directly. See below for contact information:”

I have used copyrighted music a number of times and had a mix of different content claims against my videos in question, sometimes having a video banned from the site entirely.

I have since transitioned to the royalty free music YouTube has available or any other creators that allow it.

Theres just too much risk using copyrighted content and could get you into a bit of bother down the line, so I would recommend sticking to the YouTube library or having permission to use your desired music.

That's my 2 cents on the topic

Thanks Hippo, that means a lot coming from a much more seasoned motovlogger like yourself!

I may not have many videos but do like a bit of catchy music here and there, and have already faced disappointment with the strict rules on the Tubes revolving around music

Some of my early videos I used mainstream music in them and just let them get ad-revenue off the videos, but in Europe (and the UK) soon, that could also cause some issues so I may have to delete those... not that they really get many views, so no real loss to the channel.

Or have a son who has a band who then sends me mp4s :D ....... until they get properly signed and 'owned' I'm in the clear. However they are getting a following so I might be breaching in the future haha. Can you imagine the debate with the music company who sign them up? Sorry Mr Guider you can remove that music from your end screen now. Piss off ya numpties, my son created that and I half created him. Well I put 4 seconds in to creating him, his mum did 9 months, but you get the gist :p

Get them to put it in writing that you can use the clip indefinitely for free on your channel and that you are allowed to monetise your videos with that clip in. That way, when they become big, and when you are able to monetise your content (if you decide you want to) it shouldn't cause any issues.

Trying something similar here. But she is not yet sure if she wants to as she is getting quite popular.

Would be interesting if it would work out though, isn't your average style music ;)
Try some out an on an upload, or just experiment and see what you can do with it until you're happy it works. I've only used instrumental parts so far apart from one upload where I did a whole track to a sped up ride. Cool having musicians in the family!

I know a guy who doesn't give any concern as long as his favorite song shows on his video, because when you talk aboout copyrighted music content, most likely the affected things that most people concerned are not being able to put adsense on the video and blocked in some country, but aside from that, you might wanna check specificaly what song you want to use, and search wheter that song's effect to your video being blocked in other country or not. if you don't care much about ads, it's fine and you can use copyrighted song.

I wouldn't say its fine, since at the end of the day you are using someones property in your video without permission. So it's up to them if they file a content ID claim or take further action.

As I said before there is a lot of risk when using copyrighted music, so it's best to stick to what Youtube or the creator decides is free-use.

YouTube has a tool you can use to see if you are allowed to use a song. It is pretty handy and not only tells you the countries it is blocked/not allowed, but also if they are happy for it to be used at all. They will take all the ad revenue though, but it does mean you can use it safer in the knowledge they have given permission. (I am not on about youtube's audio library here, but any chart song etc)

And in a, not yet public vlog, i have 3 claims xD Won the first one, other 2 are still ongoing.
Probably will be timed out, which is also fine xD

Weird thing is I had an old channel with a few vids I wanted to keep, but couldn't log in. (from about 10 years ago)
Anyway, I used a program to download the video to my computer then uploaded it to my current YT channel.
It was immediately hit with a copyright claim - even though that exact video had been sitting on YT for the last 10 years.

Weird eh.

I just told it to mute the soundtrack.

Could have a copyrightstrike as well, but if you can't log in, you can't check that

This specifically said it was NOT a strike, which is good.

As for the old channel - yeah no idea what it might say there.
But I'd have remembered if it had happened when I uploaded it.
Ah well, doesn't matter anyway.

A different question - has anyone had copyright strikes for any 'free to use / copyright free' music they've sourced from somewhere OTHER thnan the YT library ? I've heard that can happen...

This one is becoming interesting.
One of the claims that is still open have postponed the dispute. Didn't even know that it was possible.
The revenue is noted as "deposit", so interesting to see where that goes in the end.

Yeah, strike/claim get mixed up sometimes ;)
Kinda depends on how strict they were in the days you originally uploaded it.

In the past you could do quite allot before youtube would even pay any attention to it ;)
