Ozarks Meetup 2013

MUAHAHA! Count me in! I've been wanting to go on this ride for a while now but haven't on account of not being a vlogger.

Great roads down there. How hard does everybody ride? Last time I was down that way was for the SMJ labor day ride. Great area if you don't mind the underage girls dating their middle aged cousins. What, you think I'm joking? We rode with a pair.

Gotta ask, why Clarksville?

I attended the 1st meet-up having never done a vlog. Still don't do much, especially compared to a lot of folks here, but occasionally I burp one out.

I will have to forewarn you, being on the KLX-250, your fuel range is going to be scary, there just are not a lot of places to refuel in the region. Two years ago LJ brought hers down, I think she can probably give good advice on the subject.

That was fun. Running on fumes. :) Maybe we should bring a gas siphon just in case we need to lend her some fuel lol.

I really keep meaning to stash a 4' long section of tubing under the seat - someone running out of gas is a very real possibility.

I'll be riding a drz400sm with a 2.6 gallon tank. I'll definitely make sure to rig up a Jerry can or two

Your target range needs to be about 120 miles. Anything under that and you'll likely be running on vapor.

Hmm, yeah, that's not going to happen! When I'm riding hard in the twisties I hit reserve around 60 miles. And then I'm empty in another 20. This is one time I really don't envy LJ and her big bore. If I'm doing 40mpg on my stock bike what's she doing?

To be fair though I don't think my bike is running worth a darn.

I'll have to to figure something out between now and then. It will probably consist of a 2 gallon gas can strapped on a nomadic rack... and probably a couple of fuel bottles too, just in case.

Somehow having can full of gas (that spills quite easily) right on top of my exhaust doesn't seem like a great idea... Oh well!

I remember quite well LJ sweating it out one afternoon. A planned gas stop was closed for the day and we had to make a little detour. Trinith and I have led these rides and we try hard to keep everyone's range in the back of our minds, but we can't account for an out-of-tune machine.

Fuel stops are few and far between, are unpredictably open or closed, or can be just plain out of fuel. I've run across a couple that were cash-only!

Ahh, I hate the cash only ones. The "MUST pay before pumping" ones are a real headache. You're sitting there guessing how much gas you need, and it's never right.

I'll figure something out. Maybe I'll just install some pedals.

I spent the weekend in south east Missouri riding the Ozarks there on the DRZ400sm. Normally I get around 50mpg but running constant 70s and playing hard on the twisties I was hitting reserve at 63 pretty consistantly and my DRZ is bone stock.

I just stopped at every other town I was in at about 50mile intervals. I liked it because it forces you to stop and have a stretch which I need after hours on that bike. I was carrying a little siphon pump and hose in my GFs tank bag. Her Street Triple had more than enough for both of us if there was ever a pinch.

Speaking of which....what is the policy regarding guests/non vloggers? She has to go to Missouri every weekend on business and always takes her bike for when she is free and might want to come with me or meet me. I told her its up to general concencus, you guys might rather it be exclusive, and we both would completely understand.

Should be the more the merrier in my opinion..come one come all..enjoy good times with good people and make new friends..which I am sure is the case considering who all attends

To an extent. If you can't get 100 miles out of a tank of gas my suggestion is to either figure out how to bring gas with you, or bring a different bike. I don't think it's very courteous to force a 20 person pack to stop every 50 miles because your bike can't go very far on a tank. I don't mind working with people on things, but damn, there's gotta be a limit or we'd never get anywhere.

That's another reason I like to hit the road a bit early. Things out there close way too early sometimes.

We don't really care who goes, to be honest.

Agreed. Fuel stops can get really dragged out if not careful.

It's getting to the point where I'm tempted to start a stopwatch when we pull off. It's only going to get worse as the group grows in size too. This year is shaping up to be the biggest yet, by a long shot.

Ah, yeah. Gas. The bike WAS stock at that point (well.. way more than it is now.. lol), but I hadn't put the auxiliary fuel tank on yet.

Now it's bored out, flat slide carb, etc.... I went from getting about 55mpg bone stock to about 40-45mpg now. Eh. It's my fun tax!

I have an IMS 3 gallon main tank now, instead of the stock 2 gallon tank. I also still have my auxiliary tank in a box in the back storage room here. I've held onto it "just in case." I don't like the extra weight for trail riding and local hooliganing (or for track days), but I plan on putting it back on for this trip. I will have to pull over to "switch tanks," as it's almost impossible to feel for the two separate fuel petcocks on the fly (especially on those mountain roads). But, this would simply be a matter of asking the group of 20 or so to pull over literally 30 seconds. I don't even need to turn my bike off to do it.

With 3 gallons in the main tank, and an extra 1 gallon in the aux tank... Damn, that's a lot of fuel weight on such a small motard, but it should give me a conservative estimate of 130-140 mile range. I get crappy gas mileage when I ride the piss out of this thing.

The better idea might be to just stop, make the switch, and catch up at the next intersection. That way there's only 2 people sitting on the side of a road with no shoulder vs 20. Would be less confusing too.

LJ - Why not ride the Er6 like last year?

Why not the ER-6n? It's an awful bike, suspension wise. Excellent motor. Craptastic chassis. No linkage, no subframe. Oversprung forks. Easily turns left, strain my arm muscles trying to go right. Plus, I already lowsided once and I have a hard time trusting it. That, and it gets super wobbly in turns. Remember how much I was fighting against it last year? Any small crease in the road, and the whole back end would get airborne and step out in a turn. I was climbing all over that thing to get it to cooperate.

The KLX is a superior bike for twisty riding, and I'm faster on it, and I trust it, and I find it way more fun to ride.
