Help! I Can't Get Good Youtube Quality!

Alright man, I just got my first action camera and I'm getting seriously demotivated already. The camera that I am using is a Vikeepro 4k Action Camera. It is not a real GoPro, but the camera is not the problem. The videos themselves are recorded in 1080p 60fps, and they look absolutely stunning in their raw form. The stock footage is .MOV format with a bitrate of roughly 35k. I edit/render videos with Sony Vegas 13 Pro.

I record my videos, transfer them to my computer. They look amazing, extremely clear and smooth. Now I import them into Sony Vegas. I've tried rendering my video with a ridiculous amount of settings, and I never receive a better result. Once it is uploaded to YouTube, it gets blocky and full of artifacts and it drives me INSANE.

I have tried uploading in MP4, AVI, and MOV formats, no change. I've tried variable and constant bit rate, 2 pass encoding, matching bitrate to source, changing profiles in vegas from main to high, compressing with handbrake, using deblock and deinterlace. No matter what I do, I can never get my video to stop showing these pixelated artifacts. I've tried rendering in 1440p and 4k for a higher bitrate, no change. I just can't figure it out.

Here is a prime example of the blocky artifacts that occur: ( video link blocked. I can email an example)

You can see that the road becomes extremely pixelated right after the video starts. I can upload screenshots of the same exact video time on my local files, I can show you my Vegas settings that I have copied from over ten different online articles to get a better result. Please explain this to me.

I need your help. My video quality makes me not want to upload and that is an extremely shitty feeling.

Have you tried viewing it on different networks/computers, meaning not at your house. It may be as simple as a bandwidth issue with your internet provider.

Another possibility, have you saved in an optimized format for internet viewing? I know my editor lets me save specifically for youtube.

I have tried at multiple locations, and friends are seeing the issue as well. Plus, my internet at home is 300mbps.

I have not seen a format optimized for YouTube on Sony Vegas :/

Just to clarify - does the render on the computer look good, and only looks rubbish on YT?

To start with don't encode to YT quality, render to a decent quality H.264 file in any major format, check it looks good, and upload that. YT reencodes stuff, and that takes a bit of quality off. Upload a good quality file and it'll still be pretty good once it's done.

Bear in mind, YT encodes to all resolutions (look at the settings gear on any YT vid), and it can take time for the high res stuff to come available. If you watch immediately you might only be viewing 360p. Check the quality in the player settings before drawing a conclusion

What is the quality on the YT player? Does it show it as 1080p60fps? Are you allowing it time to fully process?

It can sometimes take a while for youtube to process up to its full quality, its why you'll often find comments that say they're so early its still in 480p or whatever

Make sure you are rendering at a bitrate that matches your raw footage. When uploading to YT you have to over-do it that way when YT downgrades it the loss won't be much.

I went through lots of trial and error if you want to look at my channel (the dual vlog is half my footage and half my buddies and he uses an old drift at 720p) I'm happy with the current output. I record with a Gopro Hero 4 Black

This! It really comes down to that!
Also just a small headsup, render in h.264 mp4 container with 10Mbps or so VBR1 pass, Square pixel ratio.

Setting it straight: The quality is 1080p 60FPS on a fully processed video, playing on YouTube. I'm not sitting here looking at a video I just uploaded, seeing it in 360p.

If I match the bitrate to the source, it's at roughly 35k. I've tried rendering in 150k, so over compensation isn't doing me any good.

Put one up as private and leave it for 2-3hours depending on the length of video, Then have a look at it.

post a link here to the vid

YouTube is crap for 60fps content due to their low bitrates and compression. The better videographers (e.g. Schaaf) use 24fps to get the best quality out of YouTube.

Unfortunately I can't post links yet, according to forum rules. If you guys know a workaround for that, please tell me. Otherwise, I can email you the linnk to the video, and even to the specific time where I see the issue occur. I've heard that 60fps is hard to accomplish on youtube, but I've definitely seen it work out well and it looks clear as day compared to mine.

It's loading and playing at 720 / 60 for me with no issues.

I didn't watch the whole thing though. Is there one part that was doing it for you or the whole video.

Looks good to me too , But Id lower the bitrate more ! Youtube often plays my videos at a lower quality when I watch videos . So, I have to manually raise up the resolution in the youtube player settings . Most of the time it buffers for a minute then plays at full 1080p 60fps.

the raw footage looks great on my local machine. The camera quality is amazing, no grainy texture, no pixelation. I just uploaded a long ride that some friends and I took on Sunday, and I decideed to record in 30 fps this time to;

A: save battery life for a long ride
B: Hopefully see an increase in clarity due to the smaller framerate.

I was thinking that the 60fps was causing the issue, but it persists in the 30fps footage on Youtube.

Once again, looks GREAT on my local machine.
