Face Reveal Or Unmasked Vlogger

I can't help but think that the most successful Vloggers, of the non motorcycle variety, all show their faces.

I mean like PewDiePie, Jenna Marbles etc. And what do we all want if it isn't for people to watch our stuff? So I'm wondering if the greater audience, at least subconsciously, needs to see your face in order to create that human connection with your channel?

Something to think about.

I think it is generally accepted that if you do riding videos, then it's difficult to see a face as you have a helmet, and in most cases, the camera is attached to it. Probably be a bit weird to go out of your way to show your face, although I see no point in hiding it if it is there.

Anonymity has worked very well for RJ though! Perhaps people want to emulate him as he has had the greatest success of any vlogger, not that he's technically a vlogger...

Totally agree! I won't be taking a saw to my helmet so that folks can see my face while I'm riding!! So naturally I'm thinking more about the times when your face might show up. How to's, servicing, sex tapes etc...

In the grander scheme, however, RJ is still a very small fish when you put him against the biggest non-moto vloggers. We Motovloggers are in a pretty small niche pool that is getting fuller by the day!

I've decided I'm too lazy to blur my face, but the missus doesn't want to be on the internet so I'll respect that and blur hers out.

I agree that we should respect others' privacy, especially non-vloggers, although if you're at a vlogger meet, tough, you know everyone has a camera, not everyone knows how to blur faces, and it's not fair to expect people to spend hours editing because a couple of people don't want their faces accidentally in the video.

If the vloggers at meets don't want their faces seen, and you don't want to edit, they can get your video taken off YouTube very easily with the recent changes YouTube made to their privacy rules.

You can, although I'm all for people growing up about it, as you can also put it on Faceache and Vimeo without any bother.

When I said 1 or 2 over the limit I didn't mean it to be taken literally, sorry guys, just a little Brit humour there but it doesn't always translate well in text. I'll say no more on actual speeds though.

I think it doesn't help that I'm a bit of an ugly bastard (**saying 'bit' may be an understatement) on the face showing front. I think, what I may do when I have the time and am home, is post the longer version of my latest vid (which wasn't a vlog as such) in which I'm in all my, erm, glory.. and potentially ask in this thread for people to have a quite look and offer opinions. Needless to say if the overwhelming feeling is something along the lines of "dear god put the lid back on!" or something then for the sake of politeness I'll keep it covered. I think perhaps it's more that it was recorded in my home, and indeed my chair, which prevented the long version being shown more than anything.

I don't think there is anything on my channel which would give cause Mr Officer Sir to come calling.

I'm not sure what's so childish about exercising your right to privacy.

Nor me.

I always respect the wishes of the people I've recorded. I had a cracking Vid all ready for upload in which a mate (on his very first ride out) filled his bike with diesel. There was much hilarity (not for him of course) but he didn't want it up so it was scrapped.

We all have a right to privacy, but you're monitored everywhere you go by cameras. If you go to a meeting where everyone has a camera it's a bit obvious what is going to happen.

What would you do if you spotted yourself in the frame of a news story on TV because you were there at the time of filming

I look at the Ace Cafe meet videos, I see lots of faces, I don't know who they all are, being in a photo/video doesn't mean you've been identified at all.

My speedometer always is 5mph under where it should be...

As for the face thing, I know a motovlogger who showed his on purpose, in order to build up his work resume :o . As far as I know, it worked :p ! For me, though, I just hope that people enjoy watching my vlogs... fame and all of that - pass ;) .....

Out of respect, anybody who is in a video shot of mine that I personally know, I'll edit their face/license plate out if they want me to. If I'm not sure whether they want me to then I will do it anyway just in case they would've wanted me to. It can be a bit of a pain to edit that stuff out but rather not tread on any toes.

For me it's a simple reason, sometimes I break the law. And I love it, because I try to do it responsibly without hurting anyone else (you know driving a bit too fast on that road where nobody is at the moment). I wouldn't want my face to be too obvious in the video's since it would affect my personal life and how some people see me. I want to talk freely without anyone judging me, I can't communicate as freely with everybody as I do with closer friends. I want to be able to be that person, open up without people using it against me in my personal life.

I don't try to hide it though, and I am easily traceable. Although I don't think any of my video's can really serve as evidence...since a voice talking on a video is not evidence that I did something. You cannot see that I am actually riding the bike...hence the face hiding. ;)

It depends. bakerXderek makes it work. He's well past 100k subscribers and no one (save for close friends) know what he looks like. I did a face reveal video because I no longer wanted to limit myself. That and I was sick and tired of cutting (or blurring) out clips that showed a reflection of my face.

If you are established like bakerXderek I don't think it would be wise to do a face reveal. But if you are just starting out? No problems there. Some people will not like what you look like and unsubscribe. The funny thing is that I did not notice a drop at all. I gained subscribers after the reveal!

yes i ve thought about it, if i d look like pew di pie, i d show my face too xD

I think while you have a point about people needing to see your face in order to create a human connection with your channel, it's also what you can't see that you become curious about. The lack of a face to a voice leaves a lot more for the imagination and could keep people coming back for "maybe he'll show his face this time". I mean look at M13. Finally a face reveal after all those years despite the unfortunate circumstances of it, and his viewers (myself included) were SO curious how he looked despite that one video where he semi face revealed by wearing a mask and only showing eyes.

I may do a face reveal if I get "found out" but being from such a small place I don't really want people to know who I am just yet.

Porque no los both?
Vlog all you want with your face hidden and if anyone asks, send a picture to them if you feel comfortable. I am not opposed to putting my face out there, but I have kept myself from posting illegal videos because it could be traced back to me quite quickly.
