Anyone using a non powered microphone that is producing good results? Fed up with my powered one as I keep forgetting to turn it on or the bat goes dead etc etc.

URL etc please :)

PS: Using a POV.HD

I am currently using THIS mike:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TINY-TIE-...E-/270976331390?ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:GB:1123

The item (in case listing has ended and you cant see it) is a "TINY TIE CLIP MIC LAPEL VOICE RECORDER LAVALIER ELECTRET CONDENSER MICROPHONE".
This particular seller (micronic007) gives you the option of several cable sizes - from 1meter to 50m. I asked for a 10cm cable, which he did.
So now I got my mic glued inside the helmet (the AGV horizon/skyline has a ridge and a small hole in front of your mouth for a microfone and its boom), with the JACK protruding from the bottom of the left cheekpad. So when I vlog, I just connect a small 3.5mm extension cable to the helmet, and the other end to the recorder, and I'm good to go. No more cables dangling from the helmet.

With an external cheapass sound recorder. (by cheapass, it was the cheapest I could find that has a usb port so I can connect it to the PC. Cost me around 40€) - A Phillips Voice Tracer, model: LFH0615.

Why the links and the recomendation? Well go check my channel and see the diff from the current setup, and the previous one. (I think my last vid with the old setup was "Helmet is BACK". This mic is good enough that I can finally hear the engine in the videos.
in fact, the audio you get in the vids is very, but very close to what I hear when riding. (just a tad more of engine noise, as that noise is carried by my body up to my ears).

ON THE OTHER HAND...

how good is the recording from the GoPro3? I'm considering forking over the 85€ for the gopro3 mic adapter, and the skeleton case, and connect my tiny cable mic to the gopro directly. 400% easier to edit (no more sound syncing yey! no more forgot recorder at home and really wanted to vlog, yey!), but what about the sound quality?

It's rock solid. Check my last 4 vids as compared to all those before. Sound quality from the Hero3 is well worth the hassel/price.

I use a cheap microphone and the GoPro Hero 3 Mic adaptor. It's a convenient setup and the quality seems decent enough. However, the GoPro only records audio from one channel, you can fix it by using a dual channel mic, or duplicate the tracks in your editing program.

Yes, I have used a couple different non powered microphones with acceptable results, one was a PC microphone from radio shack that was around $10 USD url: http://www.radioshack.com/product/i...76900&filterName=Type&filterValue=Microphones another was a Sony PC mic for aroun $29 PCM-10 I believe was the # but its NLA. Currently I'm using a non powered boom mic from Rage cams that I paid too much for as you can get them elswhere for around $3 USD and it seems to do the job well here: http://dx.com/p/flexible-neck-mini-microphone-for-laptop-black-3-5mm-jack-72801

That is because the microphone jack is a stereo plug, so for it to work correctly you should use a mic that terminates to a stereo plug even though it's not actual stereo output.

The GoPro3 records at a 48khz sampling rate, giving you a maximum recording frequency of 21.8khz, compare that to a Conpact Disc which are recorded at a 44.1khz sampling rate which gives a 20khz maximum frequency. Normal human beings are at the upper limit of their hearing ability at 20khz which falls rapidly as we age.

Wow. The difference between the old and new Miggs's videos is just mind-bogling.
Did you also change your mic or something?

Thing is.. the whole setup (adapter+case) costs around 85€+shipping, which should come to something like 100€...
And for that kind of dough I could get half of a good jacket, or an aftermarket exhaust, or crashbars, or a centerstand (costs a bit more than that), or some proper waterproof pants, or some summer riding boots......

Ditched my Drift. Ditched my mic. Ditched my helmet.

Bought a Hero3, an audio technica 3350, and a Variant - spent the better part of 2 hours disecting ++AB's sound setup, and then spent another 6 hours replicating it/modding my new helmet.

Other than that, it was a piece of cake
