How Much Time Do You Spend On Editing?

I spend friggin ages!

But i try to make the flow as snappy as possible and i like to animate pic-in-pic stuff with sound effects.

I also tend to have at least 2 cameras and on a few product review vids I've done lately I've been sticking in DSLR recorded cutaways. So the complexity is ever growing!

Stick into the mix my new Olfi 4k camera and my poor computer suddenly seems like an overworked prison bitch!

My usual workflow is to stick all the videos into Sony Movie Studio Platinum, sync them all up with each other (i scale the channels down to create a multi view affair), and then run through the video cutting out all the 'dead bits'. Then i go through again and tighten up, adding any effects by using Hitfilm Express (like after effects, but FREE!). After that its transitions, animation, colour grading and final polishes.

All in all its about 1000000:1, editing:final video!
 
I've got quite a bit of experience with video editing from my gaming channel, so with a 7-10 minute motovlog it takes me about 1-1.5 hours to edit and then because my computer is slowly dying about the same time to render haha.

I have to admit i loved the torrevieja chapter you made on 2014, ill see all the trip and subscribe man. Great edit and content :D
 
I would say for a mvlog where I have a specific topic and stay on course 4-5 hours from download to final rendering. However, that number can climb to 15-20 hours if I'm putting together something from clips of a bunch of different rides.
 
A quick video, with something simple and short....a few hours at least of sitting down and going through it. Longer videos and ones with more complexity I would say at least 6hrs...easily. I've clocked in around 12 hrs on a recent video..and enjoyed every minute of it :-) I don't count rendering within that time or anything else that isn't me actively editing.
 
My edits usually happen over about 4 to 5 nights/mornings and I guess I'd spend 1 to 2 hours a night at most doing them. So most of my edits these days are between 5 hours and 10 hours I'd guess. Although I've done a few music videos that have taken me well over 10 hours for sure!

I do know one thing for certain. The longer I do this, the longer my editing takes due to adding more camera angles and getting more creative with the editing process. It feels good to just pump out a simple one camera vlog that's a quick edit these days, but most of my videos come from hours and hours of riding, so there is a lot of scrolling and multiple passes.

I'll do a first pass, just gathering footage, then go through again, cutting out dead air and anything that doesn't flow as well, then I'll look at the length and decide if I want to shorten it and re-watch again, cutting out more until I'm happy with the length. Then I'll add text and music, transitions and fades and anything else creative. The process is completely different for a music video where I'll pick the music track first and then start sticking a variety of clips in to match the beat.
 
Usually ~5 to 10 hours but I'm 'nitpicking' ALOT. I use Youtube tutorials for Sony Vegas since I started Motovlogging mainly because I wanna learn as much as possible. I have about 12-13 videos up the last month and all of them have some short of decent editing on them 'cause I'm still testing myself.

My freakin' last video tho, my 1month 'anniversary' Channel Trailer took me a good ~30hours to put together and edit...... After I was done, I swear I could see 'jump cuts' in my sleep.
 
Usually spend a couple hours on an everyday vlog but if its something special like a group ride or event I'll spend more time and do more detailed edits.
 
Well considering I'm a complete editing noob, I spend at least a couple hours for a 10min video. And I don't add any fancy stuff just simple cut/split/...
 
for me it depends on the raw footage. how much i want to cut out or work with certain areas of the video and how long the video is
 
Anything from a whole evening to an hour. Depends on what you are after. I would advise editing to your requirements and not worry so much on how much time you spend. It's the final product that matters most of all.
 
I started out editing for hours and hours, but was still learning the program.
Also, finding the video with the content was tough, I always uploaded all my footage to a folder on my PC called GoPro, then eventually having to go through every video looking for footage was taking up plenty of time.
I then started uploading and renaming the folder with the type of vlog eg: "2 cell users and a AJ vlog" then I know within this folder will be the video where I captured cell users and spoke about a specific motovlogger. This saved plenty of time finding the footage, then with practice my editing time cam down tremendously too, saving the intro in a pre reordered file, then slap that in before and edit the rest.
It also helps trying to vlog in one seamless video, less cut outs and less editing needed.
having 2 cameras and syncing the voice and video up can be tricky at first, but finding the frames and voice 1 x 1 will quickly sync them up.

I use Sony Vegas Pro 11.
 
i'm realizing it takes like 3 hours to do it if I'm trying to do somethign I've not done before.

I *just* got final cut pro. I'm still transitioning from imovie. I'm getting the hang of the basic effects a motovlogger needs (the censor effect to blur faces/home address, putting cartoon faces over people so I can make a lil fun of them.

with Imovie I had it down to about 1.5-2 hours for about 10 minutes of video.

I could do it in an hour if the video was shot WITH PURPOSE, which means each time the camera was on, it was a "take" as in I planned it out.

if its just ride footage I'm cutting together to create some kind of story, then it takes much longer.

In retrospect, tagging highlights would be a great feature (that gopro has, but I don't like their editor. I DO like their super slow mo effect, though.)


anyone else have a trick to *tag* important sections of a long/large amount of ride footage?
I get clowned on by the S.O. for spending all night out on a ride then spending the next few days cutting and editing, but honestly with the stress of medical school/residency applications, it's a really relaxing thing for me to do.
