Have A Mac But Wanna Graduate From Imovie

How old is your computer? Could be a graphics card issue. Idk much about macs though and their graphic processor speed

so i got the 8gb of ram in and premiere is running 6.5 gb of it and i have it set at 1/4 and i can still only run the video for 3 seconds then i have to pause it and wait for the video to catch up to the sound. it just freezes. does anyone know what my problem might be?

Quite possibly the speed of your hard drive. Are you using an internal or external drive for your footage? What kind of bus is it on? (usb, firewire, thunderbolt, etc) How fast is the drive itself?

You should have plenty of proc and ram-- even though Premiere is a bit of a pig for resources. Maybe try the FCPX demo and see if that works-- if you still have issues it's likely your disk.

I've been trying Premiere and ran into the same issue with playback, I have a 12" Macbook 8gb RAM and shared VRAM. I found that if I convert my footage to ProRes first it plays just fine, but that is a massive waste of storage. The best solution for me was in the timeline to select Render In to Out, then it plays fine too.

I just switched to FCPX and it has no problems like that. I'm still learning everything on it tho. It's very similar to iMovie and that what I started on so it's Easter to transition to.

FCPX is what I was using too. I found too many things Premiere does better. FCPX has no tracker at all and the built in color tools are laughable. For me it's worth the extra hassle

I haven't figured everything out on FCPX yet but from what I see it's got everything I wanted. The part that sucks was I was just getting the hang of premiere but I couldn't stand always having to pause the video. I could never figure it out so I just deleted it.

I'm currently using VideoPad Video Editor Free on the Mac App Store
if you google this - it should lead to MAS link.
For 70$ it adds multiple video/audio tracks and unlocks some advanced features. Much faster than iMovie
