How did you get one? I was out at SEMA last week and they didn't have one at the GoPro booth!
Did they improve the audio quality or have you noticed a difference from the prior version?
I like the ability to power the cam while recording, this alone has me considering the 5 black for my next camera.

This is actually my first gopro, so i'm not sure about the difference from other gopros, It does look and sound alot better than my drift ghost s. And yeah, I bought an anker powerpack, the battery drains pretty fast on the hero 5.

The battery drain doesn't surprise me coming from a ghost. You should be able to get about an hour and a half from what the "expert" in the booth was telling me. He also said I should get close to 2 hours out of my 4 silver and I only get about 75-80 mins out of it.

Yeah, thats one of the things ill give the drift, battery life and it looks better on the helmet. lol

I just ordered a GoPro 5 to replace my original Hero+... I've been using a separate audio recorder and running the mic cable (lapel mic in the helmet) down my jacket to the inside pocket. Syncing audio and video in post is a pain in the ass, but it looks like it still might be more convenient that wearing a brick on your face, lol!

How's your postproduction workflow?

I don't find it to be that much of an issue as I can't see it when I have my lid on and it tucks in reasonably well behind the camera. :-)

I would be ok with it as is. I currently have a H4 black it will be awhile before I upgrade. Looking to pick up a session as a B camera later this year.

you could try make make your own, but im not sure if there is enough information available yet to do so.

I heard some ramblings that the adapter actually encrypts the traffic to the camera, not sure if that's accurate though.

EDIT: ok did some digging, could be an issue

ENCRYPTION / DRM
The surprise is the Atmel SAM D21E16 part (Australia MCU) which is used for Identify Friend or Foe Challenges and to offload some of the smarts talking to HEROBUS (GCCB Protocol) devices. It also coordinates all the USB-C PD (power delivery controller) and USBC pin muxing. When an accessory is detected by communications over CC1, authentication is done to a ATSHA204A over i2c on the TX+/TX- pins. Once authorized, D-/D+ pairs, become their appropriate functionality. VCONN also remains active. We've done a through-all analysis on this encryption, but will keep it internally.

The first devices that use the new HEROBUS are GoPro Karma, a Spherical Camera solution, a display port dongle for the Session, and the Gantry (Pro 3.5 mic adapter). The MCU's bootloader and "app" are encrypted and they've code protected the device. It appears Atmel's appnote was followed so perhaps they used the default keys of C0DE or GoProGoPro..

Hello guys, i'm having problems connecting my mic with the go pro hero 5. It simply doesn't record audio from the external mic... Can you help me?

The 5 Black is a great camera but when it comes to motovlogging with a gopro the 4 Black is still the better option. I use my 4 Black with a Sena backpack on my helmet and I place the 5 Black on the handlebars.
