Camera Mounts And Gopro Sticky Pads

Its more difficult than I thought it would be. I wear an Arai RX-Q and it always seemed like a smooth round helmet to me until I went to mount my GoPro to it. Bought a Chin Mount pack and probably like many of you found that its not smooth enough for the curved mounting pads to have full contact. How do you guys make up for this? I'm guessing the more full contact the 3m pad makes with the helmet the better but do you fill in with extra VHB tape or something else?

That's good stuff! I've been struggling to get a solid mount setup that I like with my Sony because my stupid helmet has a pointy chin and weird swoopy bits.

Might have to get some of this stuff. Though I'll be replacing the helmet ASAP, so maybe not worth it yet!!

I went out and bought 3M double sided tape and used it to fill in what I could, after that I hot glued what gaps remained (primarily to prevent dirt from getting in); so far it's very solid and I don't think that it'll be going anywhere unless I pry it off.

Gotta get creative, lots of ways to do this, if the curve is only slightly off i'd use a heat gun to mold it to the right curve. If its off big time you can fill in with glue but of course expect it to damage the helmet if you ever remove it. If you want to get really tricky I'd pickup some fiberglass and resin to shape the mount to your needs

I just added some more of the 3m double tape like is already on the gopro mount and made up for the gap. Now I use a different cam but I like to never got the gopro mount off when changing so it was very very secure.

I ordered some of this http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K2N2HR4/ref=biss_dp_sa1

And think I will try to fill in layers. Up around my chin there are just multiple curves going on. If I can avoid it I dont want to do any permanent damage to my helmet. Arai helmets ain't cheap.

I just stuff more 3M double sided tape to fill up the gaps. Use the toothpick to jam the tape in. Ridden at speeds of over 200 km/h without issues.

I didn't. My buddy wrecked his bike about 30 minutes after I mounted my camera and needed me to ride his bike home for him, it held just fine.

Steve the Squid wrecked?
Yessir, about two - three weeks ago. He low sided going about 60 or so he says. You can't really see the damage to his bike in my videos, mainly because he is generally behind me. He was okay, broke his collar bone and that's about it. He wants to make a vlog for my channel about wrecking, so I'll be mounting my gopro to his helmet one of these days.

Wow, sorry to hear that. Hope he has a speedy recovery!

I don't tether my helmet camera. I don't want it swinging on my helmet in an accident as I think that's lethal.

I really should tether my bike cameras though.

I used some general purpose epoxy putty, some 3m mounting tape and a trimmed down flat mount for my chin mount on my Shoei. Here's a pic.

Are you guys really waiting 3 days for 100% curing as per 3M?
I didn't wait. But the important thing is to make sure the surface is clean, if you can't wait maybe a hair dryer can help cure it faster, the weather at where I am is hot so I don't think I had to wait.

If I use suction cup mounts I would be inclined to tether it, otherwise it depends how it's mounted. Generally 3M on clean, flat surfaces is good enough, also depends on how much does your bike vibrate.

I bought a Sony ActionCam. It came with curved mounts. Contour's round mounts were also pretty easy to stick on back when my Contour+ actually worked.

All I use for my side mount is 3M Dual Lock fasteners. Works great and tested at ludicrous speed (~160+mph).

How long did it take for you to find that your mount failed?

The suction cup mount I have is the strongest suction cup I've ever experienced (apart from industrial suction cups, but that doesn't count); I can stick it to the center of a table and lift the table with it.

The 3M mounts are definitely the way to go, but I think a suction cup is a viable option if you're not looking for a permanent solution.
