Camera Placement

Where do you guys prefer to put the camera? I've been recording for a month or so now and I've always had my camera on the gas tank facing the windscreen, but I am going to get a camera to attach it to my helmet. What do you guys think?

On the helmet is the way to go. On the bike is nice for just riding about, but if you want to let the viewers feel more engaged, helmet PoV would be the way. Plus it has generally less vibrations than on the bike, but that depends on helmet and mounting position.

Good to know. I'm excited to try it out and see how it works for me

I usually have two running all the time. The first is on my helmet but on top of my helmet to make me look like a teletubby. (Not a fan of the side view personally) and the second is on my tail section facing backwards. Never know what is going on behind you till you actually see the videos. But I would def go the helmet route.

When I started I used the chin but the helmet I used for that ended up saving my live at NJMP track so I switched to the same brand helmet but different style and there is no way to chin mount so I went the top of helmet...aka Teletubby way!

Mine is mounted on the chin of my helmet. From what I've seen from others it seems to be the best placement on the helmet if your helmet allows for chin mounting.

What I find with top mount is that it's difficult to see the cockpit of the bike. If you see a lot of cockpit, then you only see a few meters of road.

I'm using chin, but want to try side mount, mainly because my XR/RF-1100 doesn't allow for chin mount.

I use a Drift HD mounted to the side. If I had a GoPro or a flatter type camera, I'd probably chin mount. The downside to side mount is the opposite side of your head has a limited field of vision. The up side is the view is almost like you're a passenger on the bike, which is cool.

I use a chin mount on my Arai Vector 2. I'd like for others to see the cockpit but I tend to be a speed demon and that makes me want to not show the cockpit. I've been playing around with the wide angle options on the camera. Started with SuperView, then to wide and now I'm at medium.

Placement I preferred most was right next to my ear. Gave a perfect view of what was going on both in front and in my mirrors. Anywhere else and you can;t get the mirror shots. If you can place it so there is as little helmet in shot as possible, it's a great placement. I also like top of the helmet for my Drift, as it's much more arrow-like than a Go-Pro, but the wiring for the external mic is a pain. Not keen on chin at all for some reason, probably because I like the air vent to do its job and I like the shape of a helmet's chin too much to cover it up

Planning on side mount on mine (we will see tonight). My helmet and the AS100 can do a side mount up by the chin so it's only about 2" off center and I can still look down and see if it's recording...this is all theory though until it is actually on an tested. Too many project and too little time!

I got my Sony AS15 all hooked up and it is so nice! I went with a side mount, i still have to play around with the angle and everything, but it is a beautiful camera. I'm uploading a video to my youtube channel now of a walkaround of my bike and some footage of the new camera!

I made my XR1100 work with chin mount, just use a lot of 3M and fill up the empty void, 250km/h no problem. ;)

I did that on my XR-1000 and worked quite well, but with the XR-1100 I would have to use like too much tape. I'm sure it will work, no doubt! But maybe I'll use it as an excuse to try the side mount. If I don't like it, will try what you say! Thanks SighBored!

With a Gopro the chin mount is nice, as people can see your hand gestures while talking, but also your speedo, and with something like a drift I prefer the top mount, so you don't lose a 3rd of the footage with the side of your lid.

The custom wedge I had to form for my as100 to do a side mount was way to labor intensive and I didn't like the fact that once taken off the Velcro I couldn't ensure that the same angle was achived when putting back on.... So I ordered the new Sony helmet side mount kit. Should be in tomorrow so I'll give a nice review of the install and see how the mic placement works out! Btw, it is part number SOVCTHSM1

My setup right now with my AS15 includes velcro. I've been researching different side mount options for the camera, and I have a couple of routes I can go. Did you ever get that review up?

I haven't slept in 4 days because of some tooth pain and it's my first slide show I've ever done but here it is. Looking at it now I could flow it a bit better and do a few more pics for clarity...but next time (and ask away for questions)

As my profile picture shows; helmet mounted. Great for capturing footage wherever I look; the action isn't always dead ahead most of the time...
