After reading that Michael Schumacher's GoPro may have been responsible for his helmet 'exploding' on impact with a rock while skiing, I've gotten a little paranoid. From what I can tell, motorcycle helmets seem to be a little more robust than ski helmets, though we are generally more at risk on a motorcycle. It's possible that the camera basically pierced into the helmet and split it in two.

Have there been any studies/articles on injuries caused my wearing a camera on a helmet?

I've known someone who went into a car, his chin mount basically saved his life

Got a link to the story?

You might be right, after re-reading a few articles it appears that the reports may just be opinion without a thorough analysis to back it up. Hopefully that's all it is and the risk of injury is minimal!

Edit: Can't link to articles yet as I'm under 10 posts. Also, how do you reckon the chin mount saved his life?

I'm not worried with the drift, The higher surface area it has on its mount doesn't look like it will be piercing anything. But a guy at work (who loves go pros) Told me a bout a guy who's go pro was mounted on his head with no helmet, after crashing his mountain bike, the mount pierced his skull. < true or not, that shit is scary

A proper motorcycle helmet won't get pierced by a camera.
The camera will be destroyed before doing any damage to the helmet.
The only thing I don't trust is a gopro mounted to the chin. Gopros have a very flimsy mounting structure. On impact it will break and send the camera right into your face. Then you hit the street and end up with gopro in your brains.

I would;t have thought a camera would do any damage to a bike helmet, most mounts would snap before much else happened, however there may be potential to perhaps turn the neck round should you land wrong on it and cause or exacerbate any neck injury. Maybe. Plus are ski helmets anything like bike helmets? I've no idea, never been up a snowy mountain...

Its more likely for you to injure yourself on some other variable in an accident.

I'm not concerned at all with having a GoPro chin mounted on a motorbike helmet. It's a world apart from Schumacher's setup for skiing.

Well, there is a reason my the MSA bans any helmet cameras "unless they are an integral part of an approved helmet"... and that's in single seater AND saloon cars!

I haven't seen any on bike racers in the UK, so I'm guessing ACU think the same?

I use a helmet camera on my bike, but use a velcro mount rather than a solid one.

If you think it won't affect the performance of your helmet in an accident, then you're fooling yourself, I'm afraid.

Oh, it might also be worth noting that, despite the massive and growing camera market, NOBODY to my knowledge has managed to get race approval on a helmet that does feature camera.

I would guess that some must have tried?

I had a feeling this was going to be about Schumacher...its an interesting point, not sure how I feel about it but I won't be moving my camera off my helmets...

I feel worse for GoPro's stock price...

ACU don't allow helmet or tank cams anymore.

Some cams are so strong that it's causing people to land funny etc. Helmets are designed to slide and stop impact to the person inside. A mount on the helmet could in fact, stop you sliding and cause you to spin blah blah

The same for clothing really, you don't want baggy stuff because it catches

Show me an example case study, otherwise you're a fool.

Whether I agree with you or not, you can't just call people with a different opinion a fool when neither side have evidence.

Does the ACU still allow cameras mounted elsewhere? I can understand why not on a tank.

I too would be interested to see if there has been any research in to cameras on helmets in an accident. Of course, it may well be the case that it does, and the severity is certainly unknown. But then again, a camera mounted on the right won't affect you if you land on your left :)

I think it's fair to say you'd be a fool to assume anything with regards to safety with a camera fitted or not as the case maybe - until proper research is done. I would imagine there's a bunch of folk right now trying to work out the best way of carrying out some realistic tests on bike and ski helmets...

Nurburgring banned cameras for a while too...until they found out it was causing more crashes because people were sneaking cameras in
