why cant I go straight from my drift to mac to youtube.

For starters any error messages?
From the drift, what video file format are you using?
Obviously there are plenty of people running drift cameras on YouTube
Have you ran a quick Google search?

Explain the process you are using to try and upload. It may just be something really simple you are missing.

what res and fps is the camera footage

That was the step I was missing. Once I logged into youtube via a browser and set up a channel on my account, I stopped getting a failed upload error.
I record on a Drift HD, transfer it to my iPad mini, then upload to youtube either via Camera or iMovie.
...You can change the format from .mov to .mp4? I'm assuming you're talking about on the mac instead of on the camera...are you? (I'd love to change the format from .mov to .mp4 natively on my DriftHD.)
