So as you all know I love my sony action cameras, and sony released 2 new cameras the HDR-AS200V which is my camera with slightly lower megapixel still capabilities and the new 3 times better image stabilization, and the new FDR-X1000V which is the creame de la creame, with its crazy 4k capibilities.

now I'm not in the market for a new camera now, but what do you guys think of 4K at the moment?

At the moment? Pointless or a gimmick at best.

Going by my analytics, most watch on a mobile device or tablet. A good chunk watch on a computer. I'd guess most have laptops, and in that I'd say most will not manage more than 1080p, possibly 2.7K, so I'd personally look to getting a 1080/60 camera and getting the most out of that. When 4K becomes more commonplace then maybe, but for the now, I'd be looking at the best 1080 machine I could and debate 4K at the next camera upgrade.

All it does is munch batteries for low framerates and a resolution 95% of people won't see.

So no value for vlogging yet really.

Oh, and you'll need a beefy computer to work on a 4K edit :)

As well as having your own 4K display to see how it actually looks...

Not necessarily true regarding computer power for editing as the proxies for 720p60 or 4k60 will be identical.

It will affect rendering time but that's not a problem.

Pointless ... unless you plan to show your footage in a cinema.

My vids are recorded and uploaded at 1080/30fps to YT and I'll upload a 720p version to vimeo.
Other people's vids I watch at 720 on the PC or 360 on my phone.

For YouTube uploading in 4k? Absolutely nothing. But, go into your local electronics store and look at two identical size TV's, one running 1080p and the other running 4k and you won't believe your eyes. The amount of information coming at you is astonishing! And the picture clarity? It's like you are there. I truly think there won't be much of a difference between 4k and say 8k. Your eyes are quickly becoming the limiting factor.

BUT, here is the kicker. 4k gives you 4x digital zoom without (hypothetically) loss of quality. And down convert 4k video to 1080p and you will notice that the down converted video is way more crisp than the 1080p video coming out of your camera right now. (it has to do with compression, every camera usually has 1 key pixel that 4 pixels are getting their information from. down convert and you will have 1 key pixel per pixel = super nice 1080p)

Hah, I just asked the same question in another thread without seeing this :p (sorry ;) )...

Answer - just another "latest & greatest" thing from the gadget companies to make money off of you on. I agree, the picture quality is amazing... but seriously, why do I need a $$$ TV that can give me a better picture of nature when I can actually go outside and see it with my own eyes :p ?

The average couch potato will love 4k boob tube, though :p ;) ~

I think 4k is a little overkill at the moment. The only person that I have seen use it for a few vidiys is Accidental Broadcast. If your up for leading on new tech then go for it. Most people only have the ability to really watch 4k on their phones right now.

I work in video production, and even we don't have much use for 4K video atm. The only real positive that I've used 4K video for is to shoot a very large scene, and then to be able to selectively crop 1080p video. Effectively it's like having at least 2-3 cameras shooting the same scene.

And the horsepower needed to work with 4K video files is stupid...

Never thought of the croping aspect, very interesting.

I've been recording my last few vlogs in 1440.

It gives me a bit of north/south on the framing (hide that speedo or show less sky) ..... or superview if I want to compress the full 1440 to 1080.
My latest was the first one I've published doing it. With the helmet bonning about you don't notice the frame shifting around :)

But then you lose that silky 60fps :(
