Welcome to Motoguy

I found this forum while searching for VLOG camera gear. I'm at the Lake of the Ozarks in the central US. I currently have a several Buells, 4th and 5th gen VFRs and a DRZ 400. I've spent the last few years watching various motovloggers and I really enjoy both the entertainment and the knowledge. I thought I would try to return the favor by posting content others may find entertaining or helpful. Also simply to entertain myself and give me an exuse to ride. I do all my own wrenching as well as buying / selling / flipping / parting bikes, so I thought there might be some content there.

I'm currently looking for information on a good setup. I'm leaning towards the Insta360 X4 w/ motorcycle kit and Insta360 Ace or DJI Action 4, and I'm currently clueless on mic setup. I wear a full face helmet (Shoei GT Air 2) and an AeroStich full suit. I've got a Cardo Packtalk Edge I use w/ earbuds for music.

Wrenching vids can be good for views, I've done a few which have had great responses.
I'd possibly suggest with running a single helmet mounted camera with audio feed from in your helmet to start with, then if you enjoy the whole process of making vids etc, then maybe get a secondary camera like the Insta360 X4 as they are more a b-roll camera and also require a lot more editing than a fixed lens camera.
Other views may vary, but I've found better results from cheaper mics than the more expensive, this is due to the use we run them in, they are normally designed as lav mics to be placed away from our mouth, so in a helmet we can overpower them... the cheaper mics are less sensitive, so don't peak out or clip as much.

Welcome to the forum.

I agree with HippoDrone on the vlogging camera. Chin mounted is definitely the easier to edit, often at a better quality, and quite easy to fix to full face helmet, but the 360 camera is more versatile.

I'd probably go for an X2 or X3 for the 360 camera though, the X4 just sounds expensive for what seems to be largely the same camera.

What camera would you recommend for tripiod use / garage work? Re-use the Action 4, or is there another preferable setup?

I just use my GoPro mostly TBH, I just set it to a lower frame rate at the same frequency as our electrics (50Hz/50fps in the UK) so it doesn't get the strobe effect and also switch it to linear FOV. GoPro's get hot when not moving, so I give it a break periodically so it can cool down a bit.

What about my Iphone 15 promax on a tripod with a mic accessory?
My experience at trying to record audio using a mobile is a few years old, but really bad, as you cannot tweak the input gain.

However, that was out on the bike using an old Nokia, with all the wind noise. It might work OK in a controlled environment.

Keep the mic close to you so that echos off the garage walls are less significant.

I don't know anything about the iPhone or its audio accessories, but older phone audio sockets handle both mic and headphones - make sure your mic's connector is compatible.

I ordered my Action4 last night. I also went with the Rode Pro wireless system as I like the idea of the wireless connection, the "clipping insurance" and this also solves my mic problem while working in the garage or off-bike. With this mic setup I should be able to use my iPhone for garage camera and have good audio.

Suggestions for mounts / accessories to get if I go with the 360 X3/X4?

Welcome! My grandparents used to live in Warsaw area of the Lake of Ozarks. Their house was not far from the shoreline.

If you want to keep initial costs down you can resuse the camera for the tripod. Also consider a second headmount camera setup for those shots where you might be in the way. Nothing like telling the audience that the doohickey is down in this area only for the audience to just see the back of your head.

Just a suggestion.

It looks like a wrenching / garage video will be my first video, as I have some work I need to do on a bike this week. I'm planning on using my iphone to record with the external mic setup. The only lights I have right now are tripod mounted LED shop lights. I suspect those are going to be way too harsh, but it's what I have.

I do have the Action 4 I can mount and record as well. Perhaps as mentioned above I'll use the A4 for the "general workspace" recording and the iPhone for more handheld / detailed shots? I'm fairly certain the iPhone will record better video than the A4, so I'd like to use it as much as possible.
