Video Editing & Creative Software

I moved to Davinci Resolve a couple of months back after using OpenShot for many years. If you're completely new to editing (as I was back then) I really recommend OpenShot - it was the software I found most easy to understand and get up to speed with. It was not without it's problems (a bit crashy from time to time) but did most of what I needed.

However in recent times I found I was wanting to do more sophisticated things, and OpenShot was quite limiting (or required learning how to use other software (Inkskape, Blender etc).

Having seen this list and others, I tried out Davinci Resolve and holy moly there's no going back... There was a bit of a learning curve, but as I was already used to editing it was more about 'how do I do this in Resolve' rather than 'what the heck is this'. If you've never done ANY editing before I can see it being somewhat terrifying ;-)

Every time I use it I discover new things. Last night I had to throw together some footage of a lifeboat launch/recovery which was shaky as hell... and I discovered how to do stabilization ... and it just worked (and worked well!)

I can see I've only made the tiniest scratch in the surface of its capabilities, looking forwards to see what else it can do :)

Hardware wise I've got a Dell Micro PC (i5, low power, gen 10) which is fine for what I do. Upped the RAM to 32Gb to give it a bit of headspace and it seems to work just fine (When rendering, it's an excuse to go and make another cuppa ;-) If you're editing a lot then of course Moar Powerrr is always a good idea.

Yeah man!!! Resolve is a resource hog like no other, but dang if it ain't a great piece of software :D

FWIW, I was brand-new to editing, having used iMovie like 10 years prior and nothing since. So the learning curve was painful for me... but just wait until you set it up the way you like - your editing will FLY.

Shameless Plug of the Week: I highly recommend watching my Davinci Resolve Shortcuts video [it's on my channel, linked in my sig below] for some pointers - some of which you may know, some you may not. It's basically the tricks I've picked up along the way for setting up Resolve and some great keyboard & mouse shortcuts.

I swapped to Resolve when I got back into making videos and it has been very nice with all of the capability it has. I've been entertaining the paid version to get hardware acceleration enabled, but haven't pulled the trigger on that yet. If I start upping my production, it may become worthwhile though since render times are so long at 4k w/o it.

I rendered a 4k vid in Studio the other day, and I have my renders throttled to 50fps for the audio plugin I use, and it topped out at 50 quite a few times. I was impressed.

It sure is. I've even had Resolve crash a few times while compiling, but I always just restart and do it again and then it works normally.

Yup, it happens occasionally. Especially if you're using Fusion elements in your video. I've seen as low as 2 or 3 fps render speed, while maxing out my resources.

-John

I recommend pre-rendering (render in place) the fusion elements once you've done those - while you are working on other things in the video.
That will cut down the final render time ! :)

As my resolve has some issue I refound this topic again.
And it deserves a bump ;)

Also, might try out Pinnacle, until Resolve works again.

Have you upgraded to the latest version of Resolve?

If not, I find it quite stable on my computer, and they've fixed a TON of bugs in the last few versions.

Yes.
Tried most things, just won't start.

Pinnacle is paid, so ended up trying HitFilm.
Not great... :p

I'm sure you've already tried, but have you verified all drivers are current?
I recall your log having some sort of driver error in it.

I did NOT like HitFilm, which is the one I tried before Resolve.

One thing to note about Resolve is that sometimes, especially if it crashes, is that it'll have a process running. If you go into Task Manager and force stop it, you can restart Resolve at that point.

Restarted the pc multiple times, deleted Resolve twice now.
Still no success.

In a desperation attempt I reinstalled Magix...
And it is not crashing at the moment.
So need to see if exporting in 4K is available nowadays.
And if so, I might "ignore" Resolve for a month and retry again then.
That has worked before ;)

Good luck! You're not the only motovlogger I know who has issues with Resolve not working on their computer. I have no idea what causes it, but it's gotta be frustrating.

The weird part is that it did work for the longest time.
Just something changed about videocard/driver and it decides to be difficult.

Yes, Resolve is finicky in that department, from the complaints I've seen online. If your GPU has different drivers for different purposes [like NVIDIA's Gaming / Studio drivers], I would try switching from one to another, see if that fixes it.

Underrated software that sped up my workflow. I wish it allowed a tiiiiny bit more control but i appreciate that it is simpler than Vegas Pro which I was using before.
My only issue is it restricts bitrate and resolution, but that is at a level still acceptable for good video quality, but it needs to up it when more folk want to upload true 4k vids with high bitrates
