To earplug or not to earplug

my biggest problem is they will muffle the world around me. And i listen to music while i ride so i dont use them atm.

I won't ride more than a few blocks without my earplugs. If I want music I use in-ear earbuds that seal almost as well as foam earplugs do. While I'm riding my ipod is turned down incredibly low, yet I still hear it just fine. Have to turn it up a bit when I'm using it off the bike.

I've found that the earplugs will actually help you hear what's going on around you while you're moving. They stop about 90% of the wind noise (likely because it's generated by turbulence within the ear canal itself) while only muffling everything else a little. I can hear cars coming up behind me, my own exhaust, even the hissing of the butterflies in the throttle bodies. Without earplugs all I hear is wind noise followed eventually by ringing.

It's kind of a no-brainer as far as I'm concerned.

I havent ridden with them tbh BUT reading that and the comments on yt for this vid i might give em a try. May as well, theyre in the drawer, lol

This sounds stupid, but make sure they fit properly. The squishy foam ones work best, assuming they're properly sealed. If they don't seal up right then they can actually make things worse.

If anyone is willing to mention a site that I work for in a vlog ill be happy to send you some free ear plugs if you want guys.

You might get over run with offers

Happy to help ;) I've got a client who sells ear plugs so I can get them for free, well if someone is happy to give a wee me mention in the vid I can anyway

I've yet to test them out myself but more experienced riders reckon they help concentrate on long runs

Ps nice pun

I've got a pair of ear plugs in my jacket pocket but have never went far enough to wear them.

same here, to put them in to go to the shops is to much hassle and i hardly ever do any outings longer then an hour. This year i'll start wearing them but only for journeys longer then 30 minutes.

Ill gladly do a vlog on my first run with plugs in, lol. May as well do it on your clients earplugs if you want?

I've known people in the past who suffered due to not thinking it mattered much. The damage that is caused does not, in general, correct itself and it creeps up on you so you tend not to realise your hearing is getting worse until it's quite bad.

Earplugs filter out higher frequencies (the ones that cause most damage) and have minimal impact on lower frequencies, so you can still hear more than enough of everything going on around you.

It's true that some helmets have better wind noise characteristics than others, but you'll never be completely free of it. You spend thousands on bikes, helmets and gear, cameras, laptops, etc, what's a few quid to preserve your hearing?

When choosing, you should always try several different types to find out what works best for you personally.

There was a good write-up in RiDE magazine about it a few years ago:

Sure man shoot me a pm with your details and ill sort it out in the morning once I'm in the office :)

Ear plugs! I love them on long rides, but can't be bothered for the 15 minute jaunt to work.
They're fantastic when used though. Really effective, helps me think more and - of course - saves your hearing. I've developed tinnitus due to riding motorcycles, but I think that's got a lot to do with the Tour X3's remarkably bad ability to block out wind noise too. It's known for it!

Anyone who uses things like Scala riders - you'll find you can actually hear people you're talking to easier when wearing ear plugs.

I once (embarrassingly) couldn't hear an ambulance behind me because of wearing ear plugs.

Swings and roundabouts I guess.

I have a set which are getting a bit tired, once I'm riding in April I'll be happy do give them a mention if the offer is still open then :P

I always wear them for long motorway journeys.

It feels a bit trippy at first when you put them in, but you soon get used to it. That's far better than the fatigue you feel after a long journey without earplugs in, anyway.

If you're having problems hearing with earplugs in, then chances are you've already done some damage... Even with the cheap yellow things you can 'aquire' from any factory it should just dampen high frequencies without actually cutting any sound completely.

I know I SHOULD wear them on every journey. :?
