Thinking is optional !
hrm... ok .. (insert much swearing and gnashing of teeth)

got several lots of vlog footage stored on a seagate 1tB external drive ...

one video i took this last weekend... i am using for several edits to create a couple different vlogs

using WLMM ... usually when i start a new project the program 'reads it into' ? the project screen ... but cos i have used this one a few times.. when i click on it.. its all there instantly... handy in one way!, no waiting .. but the current bit of footage i am trying to cut out... when i let the vid run through on play .. it freezes the vision .. voice goes on for another few seconds then stops... but time bar keeps on running no problem!? ..

no matter what i have tried so far .. i cant seem to get WLMM to accept a 'fresh version' and run through that section? ...

.. just saw a vid about Windows Movie Maker .. with this error... but .. in a flash of sudden insight... i realised windows LIVE movie maker is not the same...

what say we? ... use WMM instead? ...

yes i know i should be using one of the more advanced programs... i might try that too... but budget and attention span and patience for learning a new prog? ..

sigh.. i dunno... just give me a few points possibly on WMM to start with?? ..

cheers people

I hated that program WLMM and WMM are 2 different programs.

you could try renaming the file or making a copy of it and go from there.

or get better editing software

yeah .. i hear you... looking into better editing software soon... searching through threads on which one makes 'my poor ole skull' hurt though

i'm gonna try find someone that has a version on their computer that i can 'play' with for an hour... see which suits me...

did find an update for WLMM that supposedly fixes some bug issues...

its only WLMM thats not working the vid right though... i can play it through Windows media player fine!... not even a stutter when it gets to the problem bit.. :?

ah well... cheers for the input eh!

Any chance this could be your RAM and CPU, or a caching issue of the saved videos in your project list?

If the video runs normally when watching it through a normal movie stream, but has issues at the joins/splits in the video editing software, this seems normal to me. Try to cut out the bit you want to lose or change, and then reproduce the video and see if it has done what you wanted it to do.

Also try rebuilding your project instead of having it saved and linking to old files. Masy be an issue with those connections.

One problem I also encountered was producing my videos in AVI, so I switched to MP4 and have had no problems since.

None of this in WMM or WLMM though.

Most video programs will load video in and live convert to its preferred format / interpretation for editing purposes. Sounds like WLMM may have corrupted that cache. Tried killing all the cache files etc?

BTW
Sony Vegas is good for the price, Premiere Pro with After Effects is fantastic (and an industry standard if your wanting to get into the field) but that's big money.

Cheers lads... Will try dump the cache first ... Then investigate the linking saving thing... Most of my raw footage is stored .. And I only load it up then edit each one as a unit ... This is the first video I have tried multiple projects out of though.

And yeah... Investigating Vegas and Adobe Premiere elements?... Which were $80 and $100 respectively from what I saw... I suppose the premiere pro is going to be bigger bucks.... But if I were to go the adobe route is the extra $ for the pro version better to spend now? .. Or wait till I get more of a handle on things? .. I dunno if I'll ever have enough time to be 'in the industry' .. I like bling in a prog .. But 'I'm just a common garden vlogger' ... ;)

AVS4YOU is ok. You can get a lifetime licence to access all their products for less than buying any one of those products - photo editor, video editor, video remaker, audio editor etc. Does the basics well enough.

Well I work in the industry and get my software paid for by the company so Im lucky. If I was to buy my own I would go Sony ;)

Please don't. Sony is like corel nowadays, they acquire companies and their software and then they mess up the programs.
Sonic Foundry's sound forge was awesome. Got acquired by sony and it now sucks, hangs irremediably, fails to start, fails to read certain formats...
I don't know where Vegas came from but it's the same. On the first try I edited a test video, tried to render it and the program hanged with an unknown error. So instead of editing I found myself wasting my time troubleshooting bad software.
Corel bought JASC software. The new rebranded paint shop pro is useless. The same happened when they bought Ulead, they released their "Corel Video Studio" and it's the same history again. Keep saving because the program will hang, close and waste all your video project. Granted, it's the most easy to use editing software but it cannot stop crashing unexpectedly.

To date, I never had a crash with Adobe premiere 5.5 (in contrast with flash and director that keeps crashing every other minute).

I chop up my videos into segments using AVS Video Remaker and then bring them all together in AVS Video Editor, and add any transitions or text or photos or speed amendments in there. Found it's great and much faster, and rarely hangs.

Don't know if it can do anything special like blanking out number plates or zooming elements of the video though - it's bog standard but does what I need it to

ok... i have a resolution of sorts..

i updated to the latest version of movie maker... along with some other windows 'live' stuff... opened the program .. clicked on the troublesome file... and it loaded again from scratch ... :)

had a brief moment of horror though... had it running in background while i looked on this forum and others for my daily 'fix' etc ..

when it finished loading/scanning/whatever .. i opened the screen again... OMG!! .. every cell in the right hand window section had nasty grey squiggles on the bottom of the cells!!... crap crap crap CRAP!! i think... its corrupted the whole thing...

.. clicked play just in case ... watched first 10 seconds in review window... :? .. hang on... no corruption ... looking looking .. thinking thinking... oh.... its the 'audio visualiser bar thingy' on the bottom of the cells...

and it does now run through the previous trouble point with no problem...

so yay!... i'll do some more edits with this ... still gonna upgrade to a better edit suite... but leave it just for now till funds are better .. (this week sux!) .. plus i want to learn more of the things this basic program CAN do... in an attempt to gain familiarity with concepts overall...

like the split function... ive heard mention of a join function for some programs too... only way i manage that is a animation fade or whatever....

off to investigate joins...

cheers everyone for your suggestions and help!! .. it gave me several tips and reminders about how the programs can work.. :D

oh and a handy thing i just noticed ... the old version that came with Win7 .. only saved in standard windows format ... the update also does mp4/h264 ... which i think i read... is better for YT etc?

I'm at work with my laptop and of course I don't have Premiere installed here.
I installed a copy of vegas and it failed to open the files from my camera (it needs the paid version of quicktime to do that).
Videostudio didn't like my video either (format mismatch or something).
So I gave Movie Maker a try (part of windows live, not the one that comes preinstalled).
I dropped my video in the right part of the screen and it tried to convert it or something, I left it doing that for a while and it failed afterwards, giving me, I think the same error as OP here. The only solution offered by the software was to remove my video file from the project.
The solution I found is, deep inside the options there is a setting under "Advanced" that says "Optimize for preview" or something like that (cannot check it now because it's rendering). If you don't care about the thumbnails on the timeline, uncheck that option, restart movie maker and drop a video in the program's window. It'll work instantly, without having to process anything.
The effects will be slow to render on the preview pane but it's the tradeoff to make the software work.

Actually, here it is.

cheers Shirou .. it seems to be trundling along fine now...

"i'm a simple maaaaan .. with simple neeeeds" ... lmao .. practicing for singing vlogs .. blame Mr Aus ;)

but i have noted the thumbnail kill trick thingybob.. thanks!

.. im still gonna go to advanced program... once i feel i have a proper handle on tricks and tips for general editing...

its all smash and grab stuff right now... entertaining myself kinda... and avoiding paperwork on my desk too!
