Stereo on adapter but front on media mod?

R-Rated

While working with the Hero8 Black I found the external mic I use reads stereo when connected to adapter but front when using the media mod.

I find this strange because without the mod and using the built in mics on the camera, it records stereo.

I wonder...

I gave up on the Media Mod very quickly. I only use that for off bike videos now.

Yeah, poor GoPro reps. I found the difference in mic settings while I was online chatting with a couple of Reps. After a bit, they had to forward the issue to the "team".

R-Rated, are you trying to record Stereo or Mono? Isn't Stereo the way to go if you have the choice?

Stereo. That is what is strange about the media mod reading an external mic as front. I believe the mod has front and rear so why not program the camera to read both channels when a stereo mic is plugged in.

This is interesting. I have never used the Mic Adapter, but I use a lapel mic plugged into my Media Mod, and I always thought it was in stereo... but it may not. I do know that on the Hero 8 Media Mod, you can select Front/Rear/Stereo mics, but on the Hero 9 Media Mod, you only get Front/Rear/Camera Mics - seemingly ignoring the Media Mod's mics altogether.

Keep us posted on what you're findings are if you test it in your editor to see what channels get what noise. I may have to run outside tomorrow and do some testing myself.

That is a good point!

Sounds like another issue where Gopro is using customers as beta testers rather than getting this crap sorted before hand.

I'm still having the issue where I have to unplug the mic adapter then plug it in after turning on the camera for it to recognize there is an external mic attached via the USB.

And I hav eno idea if it is recording stereo or mono because, well, I only have patience for one problem at a time.

My life in my real job is nothing but a parade of problems. The only high point is when the clowns occasionally pass by.

There are a lot of vids about the external mic and stereo vs. mono.

I did find a best practice is to set the camera to record audio in a Raw file. It is like a back up to the track that is with the video. Then when the camera decides to not let the external mic be featured on the main track, I have the backup that I can process with a program like Audacity to use for sound.
