Need help with muffled voice

Marbro_za

Dan's princess
So I have put my mic pretty much everywhere in my damn helmet, But my voice always sounds a little muffled.

Its no where near what i normally sound like (A goddamn golden voiced prince)

Any solutions? ideas?

gopro hero (one :( ) i extended the mic on it, so its external now.. tried another one too

the new one is better... But still souns like im talking into a towel or something

i think its what called clipping.... with the later drift cameras you turn the mic sensitivity down... clears that muffle right up....

i 'think' someone around the site has done an attenuator/volume type mod for gopro mics??....

but also .. if the mic is very near or in hard contact with the shell of the helmet...... it will increase the booming/lower register of your voice... as i understand it...

... in this case possibly have the mic as far to the side of your helmet as possible... right in front of your mouth is just going to increase the bass levels and clip out...

its basically like a 'doof doof stereo car' .. with no anti drum/rattle sheeting ... so its thumping the crap out of the microphone pickup

You have a few options that you can try out.

1. Get a powered microphone; like an Audio Technica ATR-3350. It will increase the quality of your audio recording.
2. Reposition your microphone. I suggest putting it into your cheek pad. You may have to cut a hole in your cheek pad for the microphone to fit.
3. Get a good voice recorder that will record the voice separately at a very high bitrate and quality.
4. Get a better camera. The latest cameras have got awesome audio recording capabilities.
5. A combination of the above.

Currently have a powered mic, runs of a small 1.3v battery

I have foam around the mic aswell. its located just infront of my left cheekpad. I had it in the pad, but the noise from outside over powered my voice.

I'm not sure if I am too late on this post, but have you tried to relocate the mic? Maybe closer to your mouth? I have found that having it right infront of my mouth really raises the volume as opposed to having it on my cheek.

Mmmm .... But increases the likelihood of voice clipping and heavy breathing whiting the sound out.??

Just a suggestion. Try recording your voice in a quiet room, mic not in the helmet, just holding it. And try different locations, like directly in front, to the side, slightly high, slightly low. But, all very close to you like it would be if it where in your helmet. Then see (listen to) what happens. Is your voice still muffled. If it is then its the mic. If not, then the best sound/location you get might help position it within your helmet. Then you'll know that's the best you can get from the helmet.

My mic seems alright all i had to do was lower the mic sensitivity and away i was, got super lucky on the cable length and where the camera was mounted too :)
