Muvi set-up question

Hi!

I've just purchased a Muvi micro camera for the sole purpose of slotting it either somewhere on my bike, or somewhere in my helmet. The thing is not waterproof by default, so I also got a waterproofing case for it in case it goes on the bike.

Does anyone have any personal experience with one of those things? If so, where did you slot it?

Ideally, I'd like to slot it on the bike, for practicality's sake (also because I can easily record using my Scala headset straight on to my phone rather than to have to actually talk into the camera). It'd also allow me to find a spot where there isn't that much wind noise (faired bikes <3). However, not quite sure...
The other option is to slot it on the helmet. I had a mess around with a friend's ContourHD camera this week-end, and it was slotted right on top of the helmet. The audio quality was terribad anywhere above 40mph (due to wind noise. My bike isn't noisy at all). So that's not an option. Gotta find a better mounting point - and I've noticed a couple of vloggers having them either:
a) on the side of their helmet, near the chinguard (roughly where a Scala bluetooth headset goes)
b) in the helmet
Very curious as to option b. How do you fit it so it doesn't obscure your field of view too much (bearing in mind that eyes have a focal length of 10cm, still makes a pretty nasty black spot)?

Thanks,

Seb

If you're recording audio onto another device, surely the audio from the camera isn't important. I use a gopro mounted onto of my helmet, and use a dictaphone to record audio. I the sync the audio and video, removing the camera audio.

As for mounting inside your helmet, it is difficult, but all you need is the lens of the camera poking out the visor, not the whole camera. It is uncomfortable, and to me isn't as good to watch, but is a cheaper way of starting vlogging.

Welcome to the forum by the way :)

That's what I thought. But then again...i don't know, looking at the video from yesterday's trip back done on a contourHD fitted above the helmet looks weird.
This is what I mean:

I recorded that yesterday on the way back from Oxford just to test the friend's camera. Two main gripes:
- You can barely see what I see. Which is probably due to the camera being a good 30cm above my eyesight line
- NOISE. Which you can't hear as youtube blocked the audio

The third gripe I had with it is with the lens itself. Everything seems a lot further than it actually is.

In terms of sound, you're entirely right on that: no reason for it to be inside the helmet. I just thought that it being inside the helmet also means that it automatically benefits from the waterproof quality of the visor :D

That...doesn't sound comfy at all. Not just that, but it'd mean having to have the helmet half-open all the time, which definitely isn't a good option.

Bear in mind that the camera I just bought is 6cm long, 2.5cm thick and large. I guess I'll have to experiment.

Everything seems further away as its probably a wide angle lens, if it wasn't WA then the field of view would be very small.

You're never going to see exactly what your eyes see unless you have the camera in front of your eyes (dangerous) Everyone has their own idea of what a perfect view is, but its usually looking forward with a bit of the bike in the view

Right. Dilemma time.

I now have the camera. Tried mounting it on the bridge of my nose (still on the helmet), so that it wouldn't obscure my view of the road. Perfect view of...the dashboard of my bike (I have the nasty habit of angling my head down, and looking up). I then tried to mount it on top of the helmet, with disastrous results (perfect to take pictures of the sky, though).
In the end, I mounted it on the side of the dashboard, but it's much less than optimal:

Can anyone suggest a good mounting spot? I have essentially infinite velcro.

How about this - I did a blog on the best mounting places I'd found for Veho Muvi, MD80 and HD10+ cams:

I've got pics on that blog of how I did it, and you'll find the vids all over my YouTube account.

Velcro doesn't really work that well for them, mainly because you'll find you need some foam to absorb the shock, and also because you may find you can hear the velco tearing...

I also know that some helmets don't have the room to mount the cam inside the way I do with my AGV Stealth...

You'll also find a helmet cam acts like a kind-of gyroscopic mount - this is fine, but it doesn't show lean angles very well. I still much prefer bike mounted footage.

I totally didn't think of putting it on the side. I shall try this tomorrow!
