Not to mention the prices you pay to own motorcycles. Jesus christ, walking away with a big ass tourer like an Africa Twin for 4000 pounds? Get outta here! You couldn't even find any used bike larger than 200cc in Singapore for less than 5000 pounds unless it's an old machine slated for the scrap yard in a few months time after the registration ends.

The funniest price whining are from the Americans on /r/motorcycles who would complain about a used Grom costing more then 1000 pounds on craigslist. Are. You. Guys. Serious? My heart would skip a beat at that price as I make a mad dash for the ATM and buy that shit. Paid in full. In cash.

Americans tend to be a whiny bunch, yes we do . . .err, at least those among us that have not experienced other parts of the world . . .or even lower socioeconomic parts here in America. Doubt many of the truly lower parts of the ladder will be worrying with complaining on Reddit about motorcycle prices.

By the way a BRAND NEW Africa Twin in Singapore will cost you SGD 35,000. That's about 19.6k pounds.

So even that 11,300 pound price tag on a slightly higher end of it sounds mighty great to me.

I am curious, is that increase in price due to some sort of tax? If so, what is the point of the tax?

For example, back a few decades ago the US had an import tax on motorcycles to (a-hem) make the market more "equal" for American made bikes.

Eeyup, pretty much almost half the price is in taxes.

15% tax on the first SGD5000 on the list price, 50% tax on the next SGD5000, and 100% tax on every dollar after that.

Not to mention a bidding system for the right to own it after above tax. Which currently sits at $6000 and projected to get even higher in the years to come. (This system is similar to the NYC Cab Medallion, limited supply, bidding to own one, gets circulated around).

Honestly the taxes have absolutely no reason, its just a luxury tax just to squeeze money out of us to pay the extortionist salaries of the cabinet.
