Mic Setup With Battery Indicator

Hey Guys,

Normally I sit behind the scenes and read this forum, but I am not seeing any information about this so figured I would throw in my first post. I know most people utilize AT 335 for their audio setup, but I can't stand the idea of setting up a mic system where I have to wing it on the life of the battery. I have considered just dropping the money and going with a wireless lav, but I'd rather not if I don't have to. Anyone came up with a solution yet?

Helmet: Icon Variant Ghost Carbon
Camera: Contour +2

P.S. Nice to finally be apart of a new forum! :)

Well I may have actually found a solution. A motovlogger by the name of MotoStorm had posted a video on YouTube of my exact issue.

I had plugged up a powered rodemic Pro and a Lapel Mic to my Contour +2 and both mics actually muted all noise. I don't believe I am allowed to post YouTube links yet so if you search for MotoStorm on YouTube, one of his videos are called

My Contour +2 / Mic / Helmet Setup

I guess all you have to do is buy a Drift HD External Mic with a Cat Screen (for wind) and it's perfect because it's not powered and actually works with a Contour +2. I'll let you guys know how I feel about it when it gets here.

Glad you found a solution. Do any cameras require powered mics? I know professional condensor mics use phantom power (48V), but as to why I don't know, maybe because of the type of diaphragm.

...hate to tell you but if you go with a wireless lav, you're just going through more batteries a lot quicker and in a different way ;) . RF requires a lot of power :o ~

You don't need to run a powered mic but it does work better IMO. The Audio Technica will pickup engine/exhaust noises better when you're not talking...

Also I had a post somewhere about the battery life direct from AT. It's LONG, if you're nervous about it just do an audio test clip before you shoot...

I now use a Sony ECM-DS30P. Its a stereo mic, not powered, but it picks up well because its basically 2 mics. I have a single layer of painters tape wrapped over the mic, under the windscreen. Initial tests on it is good, but I don't have anything posted with it yet. I'll do my next PBC vid with it.

Yeah, the source of the problem is the Contour. For whatever reason Contour +2's are known for not accepting A LOT of mics, powered or not. Audio Technica was going to be my original purchase, but found out that it just mutes everything. The Drift HD External Mic (and it 's not powered :)) has been proven to work, I'm more curious of it's quality though. Time will tell.

For me the Drift mic seems pretty goid, although it is a Drift canera. It could be down to impedence of course.
