My 'default' road position is just about inside the right rear tyre of the car ahead. This gives me a good view of the road ahead, stops people turning right immiediatly after the car ahead (accross my path) thinking I'm not there, and gives me an escape route down the middle of the road for braking or overtaking.
That said, unless there's something stopping me doing so, I'll always move to the left and side of the road for right hand corners to give me a better view around it.
Back when i was totally clueless about bikes, I remember a huge panic when I thought I'd need to take a few links out of my chain as it was loose. Nobody told me I could just turn a few bolts to adjust it.
