I give in. I brought a MAC Book Pro..Imovie any good?

oh yeahmy next video I am thinking about talking about why I don't use mac, but I scared of starting a flame war. Its pure preference. Apple os
I ran the same exercise when I bought mine. But you have to be sure to compare apples with apples. I found that a laptop with the EXACT same spec (same processor, same ram size and speed, same hard drive, same graphics performance) came in at pretty much the same price. Mind you, that was 3 years ago so things may well have changed. Though I know that a windows based laptop would have needed replacing at least once by now. Plus the battery would be goosed by now too! I still get 6-7 hours of unplugged web browsing / Netflix viewing out of my original battery. That coupled with the fact that I just upgraded to the very latest Mac operating system completely for FREE means I also see it as better economy in the long run.

By no means am i trying to say apple is the only way, you find what works for you. I've just had a very good experience. I'm also usually the last to splash out lots of cash at the start. But in this case I've spent lots less than if I'd been 'chasing the dragon' of trying to keep a PC both current and running smoothly.
are good if you know how to use them but so is windows . So its down to user not the box

All true!

One man's medicine is another poison and all that. To paint an entirely truthful picture, I actually bought my macbook when I was in a far more affluent position than I am now. If it were to break down I think I would desperately want to replace it with another Mac, but the cost would probably send me back onto the PC side of the fence.

Although my gf has a windows 8 laptop, and we both despise it! I can't imagine working with that OS EVER!!

well I have never use a windows 8 laptop, tbh I hate laptops, to expensive for what they can do. My pc is still awesome after 2 years but windows 10 looks really good but its a shame they have cut the win8 shelf life after 1 update. Don't know what the fuck they are thinking tbh

I think it's partially the idea that they'd have to give 8.2 away for free and they can charge for 10.

But I think, much like vista being quickly superseded by windows 7, they're thinking

"let's not waste any more time or money trying to make this poisoned dwarf palatable. Let's just drown it and start again!"

Incidentally I hated vista and really liked 7

I don't like it. Things keep opening up and happening when I don't know WHAT I did to cause it! It's like the first time I got to touch a girl... VERY frustrating!

Are Apple still the king of editing? I was under the impression that Windows had parity for a while now.

I read an article recently that suggested that gap between Apple and PC with regards to video editing had closed up a bit, partly due to the power of hardware available for both platforms, and because Adobe is available for both platforms. I guess it's all horses for courses. The bottom line of the article for the keen amateur (us?) was that use the hardware you prefer, and you should relatively easily be able to move between editors and be able to do what you used to do.

Yes and no, Apple use Intel chips now, and RAM is RAM, so the components are similar. What made and makes the difference it the use of the hardware. Unix based machines can be compiled to what is necessary to run the system rather than bloating it out to cover the massive spectrum of other bits and pieces that are out there, which is why for many years all Unix machines including Sun and SG could run happily on processors a third of the speed of the latest PC ones. So is my understanding of it anyway.

It is the reason I don't use a laptop
How easy is it to update the ram and other basic components on an apple?

I've upgraded my Macbook Pro's HDD to an SSD, then ditched the CD drive in favour of a 7200rpm HDD. Plus I upped the RAM really easily from the 4GB it came with to 16GB.

All pretty simple to do. And not horribly expensive either, when considering the performance gains. It'll now start up from cold in 20 seconds, and I can be editing in a minute.
