how long to upload

Guys I've loaded up a few clips now but they seem to take the best part of 10-15 hours to upload. Now at the minute I'm in Belgium and they are years behind anything the UK can provide so I'm thinking that may be the main reason - but I just wanted to throw the question about how long does it take everyone else to upload to YouTube out to the community?

if you've got this far why not check out my new vid

It all boils down to a combination of how fast your computer is and how fast your internet is! Look at it this way, you could have a bike that can do 1000 mph, but its not much good if the cars in front are doing 1mph!

It takes me about 3 hours to upload an half hour video which isn't tooo bad

Well, from South Africa, I get the same problem.

My video's are around ten minutes long and take around an hour to upload...

It's not really anything to do with speed of computer.

It's down to your internet upload speed (often less than 1mbps) and the video file size.

Go on speedtest.net and look at your upload speed. Mines 0.98mbps at the moment which is the best I can remember it being - but it doesnt take long to upload a video because I always keep my file size low.

Also check to see if anything is hogging all your bandwidth. Anyone else online on your network? You doing anything more demanding than loading a site at the same time?

Guys its two things and it may seem obvious but its worth pointing out.

Internet Connect Speed and File Size.

Internet Speed:
Well stop anything that is using the net to speed up your connection and try uploading after midnight when most people have gone to bed.

File Size:

If you have a slow connection do you really want to upload in 1080p drop your vids to 720. Most people watch in 720 IF watching full screen as 1080 lags somewhat at times.

How are you encoding your files? Yes doing them on max quality is excellent but you will end up with a very large file size that you tube then re-encodes anyhow.

What codex are you using? DIVx XVid both produce good quality at much small file size.

Just some ideas ?

Cheers for all the input guys.

Friz - I normally stop everything once I start uploading to YT! I even have to stop shooting 14 year olds on battlefield! :(

I use iMovie 11 to create my vids and when I export them I use H.264, after editing my vids top out around 2GB!

That's why it's taking so long to upload. That's crazy. It's not your internet - it's your file size.

Choose a good file type like the ones Thunderous is suggesting or something like .wmv

I use .wmv and a 10 minute video at 720 usually comes out about 300mb. That's about 30 minutes upload time for me on a bad day.

Here's a screencap of my speed at work. I can upload a 5-10 minute video from here in about 5-10 minutes, and then YT takes about another 3-5 minutes to process it.

However, we also upload longer length content from work - a 30-50 minute video will take significantly longer : probably 90 minutes to actually upload (which is usually about a 5-8 gig file), and then YT takes its sweet time processing, probably 3-4 hours.

In other words, if it's taking hella long to upload a video, check your file size, which is directly tied to your codec and package. We produce everything in ProRes 422 (.mov), but then I repackage that to h.264 (.mov) to upload to YT...it's the difference between a 50Gb file and a 8GB file for a 50 minute video.

Hope that helps!

For me...it used to be about half an hour per 100mb of video file...but it seems to go faster now. I actually can't really remember about how long it takes now, haven't uploaded in quite a while.

wtf my 12mins video took 25hrs to upload

Mega lolz! As said above, check your file size. There are threads on here on settings for rendering your vids.

I always upload in full 1080p, and for a 10 min video it takes me about 9 hours. I have a 4GB apple iMac so it's not to do with the comp, it's my internet that's the problem. I pay for 8mbps, I top out at 1.2mpbs, average 0.6mbps, and my upload speeds are something like 33kbps... it's disgusting. I live out in the countryside and run off copper cables though so can't do nowt about it
