How do you know you're recording?

LOL, stale page, sorry...

That sucks! I know if I rename my files [I don't like the GoPro naming convention because it mixes up rides - 1-1, 2-1, 1-2, 2-2, that sort of thing], I can get them mixed up and have parts of a ride mixed in with another ride.

Could that have happened here?

No, because the card was formatted before the ride. It was a fairly short ride, so I should've ended up with only 3 files in total. Yet, when I opened the SD card I could only see 1 file, the last part of the video.

This will remain a mystery. Hopefully, it won't happen again.

Just a shot in the dark... and it's in the dark because I haven't looked for this feature... but on my Hero 3, I used to have it set up to loop recording, so it kept overwriting the same files [so I didn't fill the SD card with useless videos] and I would stop/start recording after something interesting happened, so I only ended up with a few files. Does the 9 have this, and if so, was it accidentally turned on?

That would only start deleting older videos, once the card is full. If the card capacity would have reduced significantly, I suppose he would have noticed, when connecting it to the computer, for copying the files...

That's not the case here. As it was quite a big card, that Loop feature was NOT active, but even if it would be, as Theodor mentioned, it would only start deleting older files once the card is full, and this is a 128GB card that I was using, so plenty of storage.

Anyway,I made peace with it. it is what it is, hopefully won't happen again.

The moral of the story is, even if the light is flashing red, can you really know for sure the camera is recording? Not anymore, not after this incident.. lol

Gotcha. On the Hero 3, it overwrote the file, so it only created 1 file, not overwriting old files as the card filled up. It was a feature I specifically wanted when I chose the Hero 3, and I think they modified that feature since then.

I also hope it doesn't happen to you again - there's nothing worse than losing good footage... and I have experienced it myself, ugh.

As a Hero7 chin mounted user, if I'm going slow enough, I can hear the beep sound when it starts/stop recording, else it's the man in the mirror method.

Otherwise, I use The Force to feel if it's recording or not. Since I'm not a Jedi Master you know this doesn't work well for me.

:p
