Final Cut Pro - Transcode and analysis and an export question

I notice in FCP that it T&As clips in the background. My question is - does it go through the entire clip that you import, or just the portions that you use? If it's just the portions you use, it seems to take a phenomenally long time...

The exporting bit. I export as Quicktime - an H.264 movie (keeps the file size down for upload to YT), and I see the file type is .mov. YT prefers .mp4, can I set an export to .mp4, or is there truth in that it's best to upload in a higher quality as even if you match YT's requirements it still mashes the hell out the video?

Cheers all.

'Ya talkin' about FCP or FCPX :p ??? Not sure about FCP... with X though, in the preferences, do you have the "create optimized media" checkbox checked under import? In that prefpane, I only have the first one checked honestly... this might be why the t&a is taking a really long time on import - maybe :p .

On exporting, why not just export to YouTube directly instead of the two-step method (unless you're saving your media ;) ). Anyways, from what I know, when FCPX uploads to YouTube directly, it purposely overcooks the encoded media so that when YouTube mashes it down, it doesn't look as bad :p . So my guess is... mashing still happens but if your media is of lesser quality, obviously it will be of lesser quality on YouTube.

You can set the export to mp4, I think... just make sure it matches what YouTube recommends.

That's pretty much all I know :p . I hope this helps answer your questions a little  ~.....

Sorry, it is FCP X!

I can't export to YT direct for some reason (it's a version I'm trialling before I fork out £200), but I like to keep a copy anyway. Do I want to create optimised media? I ticked it cos I saw it on an FCPX tutorial on YT... I don't know if I need to, but I wait for it to finish as if I export before it has completed, the export can finish before the T&A, and I'm not sure if that's good thing or not.

I've never seen a need to optimize the media unless I see a big problem... then I can fix a portion of it if needed... and usually then I can manually do it. Also, I'm not really sure what good the analysis part of it does except to tell you you have too much noise or what-not :p .

...so what I usually do is import it without t&a, put it all together, wait for it to render, then export and let it transcode then. I don't think it huts to export before rendering, but I like to play it safe ;) .....

Exporting before t&a might not be a good thing, but I ~think~ it shouldn't hurt, either. Ah well :p ~.....

What system are you running :o ??? Depending, PM me since I know where to get a good deal on FCPX ;) .

Cheers :D ~

After having way too much free time today, it transcodes the entirety of anything you import, regards of whether you intend using all of that imported media or not...

Now to try and work out some export settings that have speed and high enough quality when exporting, I feel the two aren't that compatible, and that I need some heavier duty processing to cope with it...

Did you uncheck that box in the preferences by chance :o ??? It shouldn't take that long to import :/ .....

Only thing ticked on import if optimise media which I might try turning off. I'll try screenshotting the steps I take.
