Drones

As a radio controlled aircraft hobbyist that owns a scratch built tricopter and a DJI Phantom 2 right now the tech isn't there plus it will be against city ordinance in most places in the US.

However, for effect or filler shots it is perfect. Even though it may say 30 minutes, that's 30 minutes of just hovering and slow movements. The more you use the motors the faster it will drain the battery. Plus there will be a couple of minutes of getting the drone into the correct position and a couple of minutes to land safely.

Even if a drone was fast enough Remember that the GPS signal is broadcasted once a second from the satellites. Think about how far you move in one second. That's not a high enough resolution to have the drone follow you safely at driving speeds. Plus on a good day GPS accuracy is 10 feet. Though there are some systems that go off bluetooth or wifi signal strength. It's new tech for drones thus needs to mature a bit first to be reliable.

Tell your friend there are wide legs for the Phantom to get them out of the shot. Or get the DJI Inspire :)

It would be cool to have a drone follow you though. The next best thing that I see ads for is the SoloShot. It is a motorized gimbal mounted camera. You wear a transmitter and it will automatically keep the camera pointed at you.

He wasn't really a friend, just someone at the meet-up. He hasn't uploaded any more drone videos so maybe he gave up on it.
I've seen the SoloShot but after seeing 'Neil's In...' issues with it and the poor customer service he received, I think it needs more development

I got my kid a Discovery drone for christmas, under 150USD, camera is ok, not great at all, and the battery lasts max of 10 minutes. You want better, you build or spend 250 and up. I just dont have that kind of scratch for a drone/ quadcopter.
