Drift HD Ghost

Sorry I don't know how to properly post links here but here's my two videos using the Drift HD Ghost. http://youtu.be/OH2UaP349-I and http://youtu.be/_MnNk-hbaEE The bigger LCD screen and redesign of the buttons, menus and other little features may not seem much but when you add them all up the whole experience of using the camera is so much easier! That means less time fussing with the camera and being ready for the action. The looping feature means all my favorite moments are saved in tidy 30 second (or other chosen interval) clips. The moment you hit that tag button, it will save the previous 10 seconds and the 20 seconds after that. Saves you loads of time fishing for those key moments. Also the remote lets you know if the camera is actively recording. These features will reduce human error and help you not miss that shot. Yesterday I rushed out to beat the setting sun and left my remote at home. I was able to look in the mirror and press the button on the camera without taking the helmet or gloves off! I appreciate the new design a whole lot more because I was able to to do that!

Same deal with 808yewtube's video above!

Still wondering why people would give a company known for shitty products another 400.00 for a camera that they will not support 6 months after it is released.

the site i normally order my shit from has it on pre-order for $449.ooUSD with 100 bucks in accessories so you wont see me rocking one of those for that price any time soon. Thats 400 bucks i would rather put towards getting the pentax k-5IIs

Especially when the exposure still looks kinda crappy. They have a great form factor but the results you get out of it suck. If it was $200 maybe I would get one for the remote that actually gives an indication that it's working but for $400 I'm not taking a gamble on a company that so far has not impressed me.

I'm glad that other companies like Sony and JVC are getting into the action cam business. They'll either put out better products that we can use or force GoPro and Drift to improve theirs.

What alternative is there? A two way remote, rotatable lense and external mike port.... to me that FAR outweighs a slightly lesser image quality.... especially considering I dont burn my movies to bluray. If only the Actioncam had a remote, I'd be sold.

I'm not upset that the image quality is not quite Bluray. What gets me is that it's called a HD camera and I get pixelation and other strange artifacts in my video. The exposure is so bad sometimes that trees and building disappear in the over exposed sky. Fluffy white clouds disappear in the sky. The only thing HD about the Drift seems to the be the dimensions of the image. It's sure as hell not sharp enough to be called HD and it looks like the Ghost is nothing more than a Drift HD with better buttons and a better remote.

From 808yewtube's video and a few others I've seen it still looks like the exposure has problems. They need to work on the results that come out of it and quit just tweaking the case. The case and form factor have been their only strong point since they started. I wish some other company would steal their design and make a decent camera because the form factor is awesome. It's just the electronics inside that suck. $400 for the same old crappy results out of a slightly improved case is just crazy.

I'm looking to get a new camera and was very tempted by this one, especially the feature to save the last 5 minutes.

However i also use the cam as a black box in case of accidents or lousy drivers.

If the worst happened and you had an accident, no way you're going to be able to tag it, and you'd lose the footage of it

For me that's a deal breaker, so I'd not use that feature, meaning i could just get the regular drift HD.

Because my Stealth has never had a single problem in 9 months of continual use and my GoPro Hero2 has gone back for warranty work three times.

I have had nothing wrong with my Drift. You just have to look after them, like you do with anything.

I barely used mine and both of them have had problems. They had problems right out of the box. It's an action camera. If what I put them through is considered "not looking after it" then they don't deserve the label "action camera".

I think it all depends on when you got it. The early batches seemed to have tons of problems. They made improvements later but they're still way behind the GoPro in terms of image quality.

Even with the latest firmware that Drift says should fix exposure problems it still looks horrible. The tops of trees disappear because the sky is so washed out when you're in a shadow. Then you come out of the shadows and everything is too dark. From what I've seen so far the Ghost is no better. It may not corrupt files because they have a system to keep the battery from being knocked loose but the exposure is still a bit crappy. If GoPro had a decent system for using an external microphone I would switch back to GoPro in a heartbeat.

There are compromises no matter which camera you choose. My experience is that the H2 has better image quality. The Drift has better mounting systems and flexibility (rotating lens). Somebody has got to take the best of both to be proclaimed the "best".

As far as reliability, it seems to be a crap shoot. I've seen plenty of problems from users of both cameras. I've had terrible luck with the Hero2, but I know most people don't. I've never had a problem with my Drift, but I know lots of people have. We need to be objective about it regardless of what our personal experience has been. I think the tie-breaker is who has the better customer service. I've never had to deal with Drift's customer service so I can't comment on them. I've had lots of experience unfortunately with GoPro's customer service, and have been very impressed by it. So all in all I would give the edge to GoPro, even though my GoPro cameras have sucked donkey balls.

I do have to say the Drift Innovations seems to be really quick to send out replacements and try to fix the problem but I have a limited amount of time to film and when I can't film because the camera is out for replacement it really pisses me off. I practically stopped vlogging because of it. I'm just now getting to the point where I'm uploading on a somewhat regular basis again.

Would anyone kindly explain me the Tagging function? Been reading about it for a while, still don't get it...

The drift is recording on a continuous 5 minute loop which uses, for example, 1gb of space.

I'm writing 5 minutes, as that is the max, but you can set it lower.

After 5 minutes, it goes back to the beginning and starts recording over the beginning of the 5 minute loop. This way you never use more than the 1gb - no filled up with junk SD card.

But if you see/say something worthwhile, you press a button to 'tag' it. The previous 5 minutes of recording is saved and the next 5 minutes is too.

After that it starts looping again.

The downside is, as far as i can tell, if an accident happened, you may have no chance of tagging it, so your evidence is lost

If I ever have the extra scratch laying around I plan on picking one up. The GoPro gets rather annoying hanging off the side of your helmet.
