Drift Ghost 4k Streaming - Using A Config File Instead Of The App

Matt Leech

What chicken strips?
I've made a useful discovery about the Ghost 4K:

The cam has a live streaming function but to use it via the Driff app is a bit of a faff. Well last night while messing with the cam and the streaming services, I discovered that I can create a config file and put it on the cam's sd card. The config file contains recording parameters, wifi connection info and streaming account login details. When I switch on the camera the first thing to appear is a question "Start live streaming? Yes/No". If I tap yes, the cam switches to the desired resolutiuon/framerate, connects to wifi, logs into streaming account, and starts recording the live stream, all without another interaction.

So far the config-file auto-stream system has worked without a hitch, and when I'm out and about I simply use my phone's mobile hotspot as the cam's wifi connection.

Once the stream is stopped the video becomes a post and the media is kept as a separate entity. I can then edit the recorded stream (trim, add music, etc) and re-post.

Here's what I've created during testing the system: http://www.driftlife.co/posts/81457

I've been using Drift's own streaming service but Facebook is an option too; no idea why they haven't included youtube.

Hey Matt,

Thanks. Super good to know. I'm starting to warm up to the Ghost 4K, especially since it looks like Drift is no longer marketing the Ghost S on their site. The stabilization option is a plus, and now the idea of a live stream is pretty cool too.

My mistake, youtube is supported via rtmp protocol.

Maybe I should create a guide?

1. Enable live streaming on your youtube account - https://www.youtube.com/features

2. Get the youtube rtmp URL and key - https://www.youtube.com/live_dashboard

3. Insert the URL and key into Drift Life config generator - http://www.driftlife.co/liveconfig

Tonight I'm going to try out multi-camera live streaming session on youtube during a ride out around Macclesfield.

If it's successful, I'll set up a live stream at the weekend and post here a schedule and link.

Does anybody have any suggestions, questions or things they'd like me to try/test?

One final thing, you're not going to be around Macclesfield tonight are you @Lurch? #ImNotaStalker

The test was a total failure.

What I eventually got to work was poor quality for too much of the live stream due to flaky mobile signal.

I guess that live streaming is ok if you have dedicated wifi in a studio, but I think we're a long way from getting anything decent for motovlogging.

It would serve a good purpose if you were to live stream & game on twitch.. it could substitute webcam i guess

Does anyone know how the live streaming is today? I have GoPro Hero 4 but it looks like I have to purchase a new camera if I want to live stream. I want to live stream my trip through Europe in June.

all the live streaming vids I've seen fall over in low signal locations, I think in most instances you would be better off saving the videos and posting them on return or taking a laptop/tablet and editing/posting daily updates while on route!

Hi,
I am looking to set up a multi cam live stream on YouTube using the Drift Ghost XL and a 4G WiFi modem. Any recommendations what would be the easiest way?

I’ve never tried it, but from what I’ve heard is live streaming from any moving vehicle is difficult as the signal is spotty or laggy at best. I shoot with my Ghost S, along with other multi-cameras and the edit things later in post.

I am currently doing this, I have banana pi r3 and three lte modems all load balanced using separate carriers.

Totally forgotten the existence of Drift cams.. Had to Google if they are still around.

Good luck in your live streaming!
