Color Grading Gopro Protune Footage

Hopes he doesn't crash this month
I've been working on my color grading using the Lumetri tools in Premiere. I've started shooting all of my footage in Protune, flat with RAW white balance. This is some of my progress on the vlog I'm currently editing. I think I'm getting closer to that GoPro promo video look.

I work on Sony Vegas Pro 13 and do something similar and if anyone is interested.

Basically 2 passes of saturation adjust, the first is to lower the 'Lows' till the colors are slightly muted, then the second to lower 'Amount', so that the reds that now pop out are also equalized.

Then one pass of Color Curves, push the curve to a slight S-shaped graph to bring out the contrast.

Then the last is a pass of Color Correction, I usually put the lows slightly blue and the highs slightly orange.

If you're filming on a camera that has D-Log, it helps as well.

You get something like this in the end :

This is where a lot of peoples footage goes from drab to great looking (i avoided the word fab on purpose). Looking good dude.

Very nice. What ISO do you film at?

I find I get better results with auto white balance as the environment changes so much when riding.

That's what I think is missing from the Drift is the option to adjust ISO etc... hopefully with the new OLFI I'll be able to mess with more advanced settings.

I believe it's currently at 6400 still. I was under the impression that it was in fact a "limit" as its noted. But reading up it seems that I could likely benefit from lowering it a bit.

Also, I decided against auto white balance when I experienced some white balance "flicker" in a few shots. The GoPro doesn't fade between values in auto mode. It hard cuts and it's noticeable. In Premiere you can key frame the setting in Lumetri if needed to smoothly adjust WB as you change lighting conditions.

Very good work... Now you got me lookin back at my videos... Yep I will be messing with those presets also.

Correction ... My 3+ is at 1600. The 3 doesn't allow ISO adjustment, so it's at the default equivalent of 6400.

Nice work man, I've tried using Premiere for colour grading but I just can't get used it, I prefer doing it in After Effects. The difference in the first image is great.

Have you tried it in CC15? They added the more functional Lumetri tools in that version. Before that you almost had to jump to Speed Grade to get it done, or use After Effects like you mention. Speed Grade is still more functional, but Lumetri within Premiere can get your usual jobs done without having to swap programs.

holy shit is normal video really that bad?
No. It's in Protune so it's a flat profile with increased dynamic range. Standard applies adjustments on the fly. I use Protune like this for the increased bitrate and the flat color gives more options in post.
