A suggestion from GoPro

So I recently contacted GoPro about an issue and they had to send the problem to their team.

Check out this suggestion to eliminate the pop that sometimes happens...

I can't wait to test this out! My hypothesis is the camera is always adjusting the gain so when it drops it and we're hitting wind suddenly, we're getting the pop from the audio maxing out roku easy.

I am also going to test using the line in and out on my Tascam so it can keep the audio steady as far as input which would keep the camera from adjusting the gain so much.

.... and are they really suggesting that you start recording for 5 min at a standstill prior to every time you want to record a video?

If you are using a Tascam anyway, why not just keep the audio and video separate and synch them up when you edit the footage?
Well, that would be great except when starting and starting several times during a ride and then there are those times when using multiple cameras.

Besides, the point of the Tascam is to demonstrate to GoPro their firmware is lacking when it comes to modulating the gain.

What, you're not doing this already? I mean, c'mon, get with the times!

Actually, that's only half snark... because my Hero 9 sometimes likes to freeze up and I got tired of losing good footage, so I start recording, THEN start my bike and put my helmet on... which takes about 2 minutes. By that time I know if the Hero 9 is gonna record OK or not, and I go ride.

I also don't stop/start recording until I am at my destination or the Hero 8 runs out of juice.

I'm following this because knowing is half the battle, and I wanna know :D

That freezing up on the 9 is ridiculous!

I will say GoPro techs were really thorough on finding out what model mic I used, what SD card and specs, and such.

At one point they suggested that the issue is the bike is interfering with the camera...

I remember parking one of my motorcycles next to a lorry some time back, and I couldn't deactivate the alarm/immobiliser until the lorry left as it's CB radio interfered with it, it also happened with the same bike on the naval base I was on. I ditched the alarm in the end as getting stranded is never fun.

I doubt the GoPro pop is due to any sort of RF or electronic from the bike. First, the RPMs change through all the gears but the pop only starts around 60 mph and gets really bad around 70 to 80 mph.

The RF can be ruled out unless as I get closer to 88 mph, the bike is starting to pick up Doc Brown calling me. Otherwise the pop should happen no matter where I am or how fast, just as long as the bike is running.

Finally, then not matter the reason - it should happen even without the external mic. Easy to test - put the camera in the trunk and run 80 mph. Then test it locked in a sealed dive case going that fast.

I must be lucky, I've had zero issues with either my Hero 8 nor Hero 7. No freeze ups, no sound popping, they've both been pretty flawless so far. I do wish the batteries lasted longer but hey everyone does! :D

Hey, just an update on my issues with the Hero 9 ... I reached out to GP customer service yesterday, and they asked a few questions [swap batt/SD, do manual firmware update], all of which I'd already tried, so they just sent me an RMA and I got it in the mail. It looks like it'll be 2 weeks until I get it back :( but at least they're sending me a replacement!
