2 Hour Render Times, Normal?

hey everyone,

I finally got around to making an intro for my video so i decided to finally composite one together and throw it up on youtube. The only editing i ended up doing was adding the intro to the vid that i posted. I rendered one out with "action cam movie creator" and another with "adobe after effects", both programs gave me ~2 hour render time for a 10 min video at 1080p.

I'm 99% sure is not normal, but then again it could be normal for some.

Does anyone know how i can speed this process up, maybe a different program, or computer?

How long is the render time for everyone else?

it depends on the memory and processing power of you laptop/PC. mine is crap so it takes me about 3 hours to do anything. but other it takes 20 minutes... might be your settings though. what software are you using?

If you are using Aftereffects then that sounds about right. My suggestion based on what I did and do. Make your intro its own small video file and render it out. Then you can just place it in your video next time and it will decrees the render time.

I tried using "After Effects" and the "action cam movie creator" which came with my sony cam. I'll admit 3 hours suck man, and i thought my 2 hours was outrageous lol.

I actually did that and kept the intro down to ~8 seconds. That basically the only thing that i added to the original. I might try it in school i guess, they have better computers over there.

Try sony vegas... thats what i used to use and will be using again soon. There was a tutorial on how to get it for windows 7 on my graphics channel /FzaDesigns not sure if its still on there though buddy

From my experience the main factor determining rendering time can be the processing speed and power of your computer. I used to have 1 hour render for a 5 minute vlog (2009 Macbook Pro, Imovie09, hard disc processor) and now it does the same in about one minute (2014 Macbook Pro, Imovie14, solid state processor).

wow, that mind blowing to me man. I'll have to definitely look into it and try different computers. I find 2 hours unacceptable so im glad to hear that there is another way. thanks for the replies.

I have a fast computer (i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz × 8) and lots of ram (14 usable Gb), and it still takes about an hour to render something around ten minutes long.

I'm using kdenlive on Linux, so that might have something to do with it.

Like others have said, hardware >>> software for rendering speed. This doesn't mean software doesn't matter... it just matters less overall.

And it takes much longer to render 1080p than 720p. Also depends on whether you have any other processes being undertaken while you are rendering - motherboard, memory and processor are key, as well as whether your original files are held on hard disks or being accessed from the camera via a USB

Good points.

Don't have a ton of programs running along with twenty web browser tabs, music, and youtube videos running while you render. That'll slow things down a ton.

I just close most programs and use a different computer or the Roku while rendering.

It all depends on my render settings... But I have gotten close to an equal rendering time. Which means 1 minute of footage, 1 minute of rendering.

wow thats sounds like what i need to do, i'm trying something new where i convert the video using adobe media encoder to h264 before i do any editing. so far quality seems to be the same but the video size got cut down from 8gb to about 700mb. Haven't rended it yet but i'm hoping that it helps too

For anyone who uses after effects, please go with Sony Vegas :) you'll get used to it very soon...and render times and editing flow is much better. I have used After Effects for a VERY long time...and I'm almost depressed to find out my life could have been so much easier.

Does Vegas do titles and template creation then? AE isn't really an editor, it's effects above and beyond an editor.

Ill try vegas then, I recently tried to edit the videos at school since they have much better hardware. Render times have shrunk dramatically. but ill definitely try Vegas.

Btw what program do you you lurch, and what are your render times.

I use Final Cut Pro for editing, render times can vary depending on how many layers and titles and fades I shove in, think the best I've had is 2:1 for a very basic vid (intro/short vid/outro), has taken maybe an hour for a 5 minute with lots of extras and PiP. Not really paid much attention, just pop the charger in so it doesn't sleep or idle and come back later :)

Depending on your computer setup + program features, you may be able to choose to render from your video card which could reduce the time required as well.

Let me thread-jack for a moment, is it normal to have a FCPX library size of almost 200GB when your event video size is about 2 hours? A 2 hour video is roughly not more than 20GB I believe. It's ridiculous that the library file is so fat! There is only ONE event / project (the 2 hour video) in the library, nothing else.

It depends on your settings. If you create optimised media and copy the files to the library, then it will bloat the library. I only tick the proxy media box as it makes the preview smoother.
