I had to upgrade my laptop to do editing...definitely hardware is key...make sure you have an independent graphics processor..its called a "GPU".
Make sure the editing program has a setting to allow you to use this GPU other wise it will use your main CPU processor , which is slower for graphic processing.
Lastly use a program that can directly edit compressed files, like MP4, this saves a ton of time from not having to decompress and recompress the footage.
For example, go pro studio will take an MP4 from the gopro and uncompress it to an AVI file for editing..then the final output is recompressed into MP4 (if uploading to youtube) PCyberlinks power director (with a decent spec PC) works directly on the MP4 from the go without doing any of the above.
I get roughly 1.5 seconds render time for 1 second of footage, even with special affects, slow motion, zooming ect...
I have a Lenovo U430 ideapad laptop with SSD i5 proc and 8 gig memory and use Cyberlink power director 13.
Damn glad I put out for all this as it is sooo much more enjoyable to edit stuff now, not to mention quicker. Hope this helps buddy...
