Asking For Permission

Does anyone go out of their way to try to ask for permission to use music? I ales a small time guy, Nightcall, who was featured on YouTube.com/MrSuicideSheep and got back to me in a day. If I were ever worried about getting a strike over using the song, I'm not any more.

You can always ask. Wont stop you getting automatically flagged necessarily but you have the proof to challenge it if you do.

if I am using anyone else music I will normally ask. for the Most part i have lots of friends in the music making industry so I just use their music. just got to have it in the description on where people can find the song and artiest

It's very rare the person who makes the music, owns it.

If you ever get permission, screen grab fhe email and keep it, just in case

And be warned if its a big ish band they may have many deals world wide with distribution so any permission you get may be only for that locality.

Saying that there are loads of CC bands out there they give you full commercial rights to use their work as long as it is incorporated within some media. There be a thread on the board somewhere with a list of good sites.

If I'm lucky I wont ever get an automatic flag. I like to try and keep everything legit and down to earth so I think I'm gonna aim for small time artists and always try to talk to them about using their music.

On YouTube they can for sure. So even if you did have permission the band can change their mind and ask YouTube to remove it.
Remember YouTube isn't there to fight legal problems for you and will always side with the easiest route (and I don't blame them!)

If the artist(s) have a contract, you'll probably need written permission from the recording label as proof since it's very likely they sold rights to their music.

If I have music, I always go for completely royalty free (always read the terms,) just to save having to re-edit, upload etc. in the future, just gives you that peace of mind of not having to worry!

Me too, and there is some great royalty free music out there.

I used a copyrighted music in my vid, checked it in Add-Supported Music on Youtube and seems to be fine to use it as long as you dont monetize the vid. As long as you are happy not making 1cent from the vid you are fine. Thats what I gathered from the info I found. Correct me if im wrong.

You can use pretty much whatever copyrighted music you want nowadays, but you can't monetize. Once it's flagged, they automatically monetize your video for the copyright holder and you get nothing.

The copyright holder has the option to monetise your video for themselves or get it removed. It seems a lot of people choose the former fortunately.
