Do You Really Need To Upgrade To A Gopro 4?

I think its a bit too soon to be releasing an upgrade, drift made a new modal which is good. I think go pro see themselves as the apple of action cams

Yeah special, if you have a 4K monitor/TV, editing software which can render 4K, Grapics card, The space on you HDD for all those 4K vids. And then the time to upload that to youtube, knowing 1 in 100,000 views Might be able to make use of it.
Christ I only vlog in 720p, I just don't think anyone cares. If i was snowboarding or doing crisp action shots then 1080p at 60 fps would be Ideal but I wouldn't trade 30 frames for 4K

Just because you don't have the equipment or a use for it, that doesn't mean it's not special and it definitely is new.

As I said anyway, for vloggers uploading to youtube it's pointless.

4k is as special as HD was when it First was available, not at all. It wasn't until people could afford the TVs Consols and BluRays to be able to use it, that it became remarkable.

Its like IMAX, we have had it for so long, but even when they made the Dark Knight film, There were only 4 IMAX cameras in existence (Funny fact: Christopher Noland also broke one of those 4) And you could say IMAX is incredibly special. But who owns an IMAX screen.

Well you're right that almost no one does, I just didn't want to go in circles when we're agreeing the Hero 4 is pointless for us/YouTube :p

The step from HD to 4K is far less than the 360 that was around before. 3D was going to be the big yhing, yet there's little noise about it.

Until large displays are common place with a high pixel desnity, Ultra HD ia going to be very limited

The reality of having a big display is either it is going to be a distance from the viewer, or it is simply "because you can".

There's also the consideration that high frame rate high resolution material needs to be shot very differently to regular HD. 60fps needs to be smooth gentle camera movements- been commented on here by at least CBRHoonigan that it makes him feel sick. Keep going on fps and wide aspect, it will only make it worse before you NEED image stabilsation or steadycam type arrangements on bikes.

So yes you're both right. The 4 black is impressive, leading specifications in one of the smallest packages, but HD720/1080 at 60fps is where motovlogging is at. Probably where a lot of action camera use is at due to image stabilisation.

3D was and is a fad, until 3D can be done without stupid glasses or headaches it will never have its place, the only time I have ever loved 3D was with 'how to train your dragon' but that was just because it was an awesome movie. Id like to see action cameras that go into 240+ Fps. Just have to work on processing power and battery. Obviously when you get into high-speed filming everything becomes a lot more stubborn

I would need big improvements in battery life and capacity (dual SD slots) for 1080p240. That would be awesome though and well worth an upgrade!

There's going to end up being a realistic limit on fps as well. You're getting in to the territory of slow motion there, and slow motion is generally used to show one short thing as 240fps is four times longer than standard 60fps.

Other thing with higher frame rates is the amount of light you need. Getting above that demands more light to get a better exposure.

Traaditonally cartoons ran at 24fps and that was smooth enough, higher fps removes any perceived flicker, but I challenge the average person to honestly say they can tell the difference between 50 and 60fps. I've not seen 120fps yet, and I don't think it would be anywhere near the difference that 60fps is from 30fps. On to battery and storage, you're in to writingh 4x the amount of data in the same time period, which then requires more power.

It's back to the general needs. If you NEED high quality high fps footage then you're in to buying a Phantom, but theyre larger cameras with phenomenal storage and a big battery, the battery is 3x the size of a GoPro on the Phantom Flex.

GoPro are great cameras, but they're not true broadcast cameras, they're action cameras deaigned to be body worn for POV shots. It's not a television camera. It doesn't cost £40k either. The whole optics thing is another debate too.

Horses for courses.

50 and 60 is not that easy to tell the difference, but 30/60 and 60/120 is very easy to see.

Yes 240fps would just be for slow motion and all my content will be at 60 fps, but 1/4 speed at 60fps would be awesome. The GoPro's will eventually have that and I'm in no rush for it any sooner.

plus the higher the frame rate, the worse the exposure, the old phantom cameras could only do a postcard size video at 15000 fps and it is dark as shit. I know there is a big difference between 240 and 15000 but those cameras are designed to deal with 4 seconds of of footage. But a little trick I learnt, if you want to make a good slowmo that doesn't look jumpy. Just repeat every frame, its the same thing Quentin Tarantino did at the start of reservoir dogs, granted it isn't as smooth as a higher frame rate, but use the right music over the top. And maybe a nice filter
I would need big improvements in battery life and capacity (dual SD slots) for 1080p240. That would be awesome though and well worth an upgrade!

4k is not new in japan ;) think there devloping 8k, And it will take off it always does, but it just takes time, by the time it does get ahold like the dvd to bluray or normal res to hd the gopro 4 will be out of date, so either way its just there way of wacking a hefty price tag on something 90% of the population cannot use.

The new GoPro has some amazing features...but for vlogging it is overkill. The HD3 is perfectly fine to make a high quality video
