Drift Ghost-S High Pitch Sound Problem

Same set up here (Ghost-S + Drift Mic) and yeah I get the issue too. Also noticed it when i'm just using the internal mic.

Usually I just apply a notch filter in audacity at 11KHz, cleans it up nicely. Minor annoyance but I'm pretty used to audio editing now and its a quick fix.

Thank you Alchemy for the notch filter suggestion.
In Sony Vegas one can use
1) Tools
2) Audio Event FX
3) Track EQ
4) Tab 3

a Frequency 9,6000 (not 11k, but this may vary)
b Gain -Inf,
c Bandwidth 0.2

I also believe that it might be fixed in the firmware.

It seems that the microphone settings do not set the microphone amplification to an invariable level but rather control the amount of automatic gain control applied to the audio.

The whine is heard in the pauses in ones narration when the auto gain control ramps up to try record the silence at the microphone, so succeeds in recording only its own interference.

The interference itself (and the circuit board wiring therefore) is not so bad but for this high variable level of auto gain.

If it were possible therefore to turn off automatic gain control as an extra setting, allowing us to set an absolute, invariable microphone gain setting appropriate to the loudness of our voice, then it may be possible to remove the whine without using a filter.

I have written to customer support with this suggestion.

I had this problem. I put the cause down to a poorly seated mic in the port. I put in the mic adapter that came with the Drift and attached mic to that, and now the problem is gone.

I will try that, but there are people reporting it all over the net. Are you sure that the video when you used the adapter was not just in a noisier environment? It does not occur in an noisy environment because the auto gain control does not ramp up the amplification in an attempt to record silence.

You cannot turn off AGC on the ghost? What a joke!.

It seems like the sort of thing that should be possible with a firmware update. Please petition Drift innovation.

I asked them but they did not respond.

I asked them something waaay more simple.
You know the drift HD has an external LED connection, the external LED that lights up dimly red when the camera is on and lights up full-power red when recording.
The camera also has a built-in LED that lights up blue when charging, green when on, red when recording and amber when turning off.
Well, the internal LED also blinks RED, AMBER, RED, AMBER when the card is full or something happened and the camera can not record.
When there is a problem, the external LED keeps steady red so you think you're recording but the camera is not because there is an error.
Quick fix: the internal LED blinks keeping the red LED lit and the green blinks. Just by changing not more than 2 lines of code you can make the red blink and keep the green steady on, that is a firmware modification that will solve a hardware problem and doing that the external LED will blink too, dim red, full red, dim red, full red so you know inside your helmet the camera is facing trouble and stop and check, instead of thinking the camera is recording.

Contacted drift on facebook, trough support, trough customer service, never got an answer back.
I also have other "Ambarella" based cameras and the AGC on a JVC can not be turned off, BUT, the Liq cameras I have also use Ambarella and you can choose 3 sound levels for the microphone.

I can't really speak for that high pitched noise... I use an after market mic... I paid 40 bucks and it's clean as fuck :)

Shirou (シ郎?)
Wow you can decompile the firmware. Since you can see the code, can't you rewrite it yourself?

Ambarella of Santa Clara huh. Same as Go Pro. I did not know.
> AGC on a JVC can not be turned off, BUT, the Liq cameras I have also use Ambarella and you can choose 3 sound levels for the microphone.
That does not sound promising. the Ghost S also has at least three sound levels, but the problem is that these are not absolute levels but amounts of AGC, since it is clear that the whine is only heard in the silent parts. If the AGC can't be turned off in the JVC then perhaps it can not be turned off due to firmware or Ambarella limitations in the Ghost and Liq (
) as well.

But then, I get a bit of whine even as I am talking.

Please would you share the make/model of the microphone? I am using a Sony ECM MS907 and another very cheap microphone and both of them have horrible whine in noiseless situations.

Make sure your microphone is not on the same side of your helmet at a blue tooth intercom... that will cause a high pitch buzz.

i have the same issue with my drift ghost-s and i put the Graphic EQ in sony vegas to 0 for the 10Khz and it's gone

I also have the Ghost-S with the official Drift mic and I had the high pitch noise as well....I emailed Drift who told me to exchange the camera. So I did. And the camera I got has the same problem! Decided to stick with the camera (cause I love it otherwise) and just edit out the noise using Audacity.

Hello guys ! Good news, I found a solution !!! Forget the sound editing in post. I have a Ghost-S, the drift external mic AND this horrid noise. The problem is definitely a badly designed mic. What you need is a stereo mic with a stereo jack even if the audio input is mono. I have bought a $5 mic which works flawlessly I believe drift innovation had the solution all along but won't admit their crappy mic will never work since the audio circuit is probably not properly grounded. I think the noise comes from a poor insulation of a wire or even the jack connector itself.. Too bad it took me 2 years to figure it out. I have a professional use of my drift. Not having a proper sound and a jack audio input is unacceptable for me. Drift innovation customers support has been less than helpful.

I tried a stereo microphone and it did not improve the situation in my case. Perhaps if the microphone is noisy enough the auto-gain control will not ramp up to levels where the whine can be heard.

I use a 9600 notch filter instead for the time being but I wish that it were possible to turn off the auto gain control.
