Editing on a Mac

I'm talking spectacular failure, not just a reinstall!
Never had that problem, then again I build all my comps with quality parts, typically store bought HP, COMPAQ, and stuff go up quick, they use the cheapest of the cheap parts

I've not had a desktop for years, laptops don't last. Tried many brands. Figured if this Mac lasts more than 4 years, it will have paid for itself.

Ive had 3 pcs my whole life you just upgrade them as you go, something breaks you replace it :p something in a mac breaks you need a new mac ahah

i dont know ive got a gaming pc with an i5 2 terrabytes of hard drive space and about 8 gig of ram or so for less than 500

Hi all,

Been trying to search on the forum, but had no luck with any meaningful results, so my apologies if this has been covered before.

I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro (Retina) 4GB RAM and 2.4GHz i5 processor. I've been using iMovie and Final Cut Pro X so far to edit movies. What I would like from editing software is to simply and easily cut clips, add titles, transitions, text, arrows (inc tracking the arrowed target), blur faces/plates, zoom footage and PiP.

iMovie doesn't seem to offer a huge amount, although is great for very basic editing, FCP is better, but takes ages to render videos in H.264 with AAC audio. Just rendered a 5m53s clip at 1080p took about half an hour/40 minutes to render, and is also 600MB (down from an estimated 990MB). The raw footage (Drift Ghost) was 702MB, I just added a opening and closing title. Should it take way longer than the clip to render it?

I am very new to all this, the only editing I have done before was splicing clips in WMM (when I had a PC) of my daughter's concerts, I don't remember it taking that long to do a project.

Any suggestions for editing software that's versatile would be appreciated, I don't mind if it's a reasonably priced paid for product, although being able to trial it would be advantageous if it is a paid-for program.

Thanks all,

Lurch
Hey, i use FCPX aswell..

the issue with render times is Your RAM and HDD speed.the reason the video file is so big is because your preferences you have setup, The first imported Video file will determine the video bit rate and frame rate of what the Saved/Master file will be..If you want to compress the video even more after FCPX has exported the master file you should download "HandBrake" for mac.Nothing is wrong with FCPX, its your computer as FCPX requires ALOT of ram. Also using the codecs and Non proxy media will cause this issue.did you pre render the video before export? this speeds up the exporting process.

The HDD speed shouldn't be an issue, the new MBPs have solid state high speed drives (allegedly), so the rest will be down to RAM then.

I've since changed the import settings to "source", but not had a play yet, it's a case of finding time to edit through some footage and also make an upload out of it.

How does one add simple text or arrows to point at or follow a subject in a video in FCP? Not got Premier yet to try out.

I've watched some of your clips, need to go and rewatch them now to see what you've specifically done while editing them, although it may have to wait for a couple if days as everywhere I've been in Austria has had "variable" wifi access...

I've had my non-apple laptop for 5 years. The only problem with it is the dead battery, which will only cost $50 to replace should I ever decide to replace it. Bonus: I can upgrade the ram if I want to.

I can only dream of a PC laptop lasting that long!! I hate changing computers, it's a real PITA...

Problem is trying to edit video on a laptop, no matter what its going to be slower than a desktop. If you want to destroy video editing, get a i7, lots of ram with a SSD and use Adobe Premiere with a supported Nvidia graphics card with CUDA, this will use the power of your GPU to encode your video which is many times faster than CPU encoding. Build a PC with that setup it will be 1/3rd the cost of a apple, hell you can even get all that in a nice Asus laptop but the price will be much more than a PC desktop.

Have you upgraded to the latest version of FCPX? I hear 10.1 is better than 10.0.x but haven't tried it yet. I've also heard that setting up all of your FCPX files to work off of an external HDD will be quicker because the main HDD isn't trying to do double duty multitasking.
As much power as FCPX uses, I doubt you don't have your MacBook Pro plugged in but just in case, power it (throttling)! Also, a laptop/CPU cooler might help as well since the CPU tends to throttle on those when the temp gets really high.

Hope this helps a bit :p . Been using Macs and only Macs since the Apple IIe :p ~

Oh yeah you can get laptops with SLI 780gtx's and a I7 but you would pay 2x more than a desktop with the same setup and you will still get better performance out of the desktop.
