Hi Gang,

I've checked for leeks. None, pressure held over night. Just worried there might still be glass. Which will work its way in and who knows what. This is worst example from several cuts and gouges in the rubber. This is the rear. Front unscathed.

Get it looked at or replace?

Thanks in advance

Crikey mate - usually I get one that deep but not into the tread like that, so I consider the tyre is thick enough to be ok.

I would be concerned too - and I'm relatively inexperienced too so that would make more concern.

Not sure about replacing, but would certainly keep an eye on it and the pressure and maybe ask at a decent bike shop that you trust for an opinion.
Props to you for doing pre-ride checks brother ;)

Thought tyre could handle it. You hit the nail on the head, lack of experience is raising concerns. Its was fine this morning too. Riding past a a crew I trust later. I'll ask them. Every time I pull in they try to convince me a shorter pipe is better and a rectangle light would suit Raven. Always good fun in there and drool over rides.

Cheers Cap'n

It's hard to judge the size from that photo, but bear in mind motorcycle tires flex a lot during regular use. That cut is now a weak spot in the carcass and the stress from flexing (in that area) will be focused on the bottom of the cut. Eventually it will get deeper. How long will that take? That's the hard part. Personally if I saw a deep cut in the tire of my bike like that I would have it replaced sooner than later. Maybe not immediately, but I wouldn't put it off too long. I wouldn't rely on the "It still holds air" concept either. It can go from holding air just fine, to catastrophic blow out pretty easily.

Cheers Trinith, thats my concern...catastrophic failure. Time frame; prob 30min from riding over glass to home. Did my best to avoid it all. Wasn't there the day before. It was wet and think the water helped lube the glass. Therefore make a swift deep cut. The crew that service her offered to have a look and advise. Thanks for ya comments.

Not a scientist.. but

Id get that replaced. the tyre will start to move around and the cut will tear making things less fun

Sure. A few minutes won't make much difference, I was thinking more along the lines of months. You could likely put another 1000 miles on that tire with no problem, but really..why risk it?

It looks like that tyre is starting to get low anyway. I would probably use this tyre while you look for another. But at the end of the day I would just do what the bike shop says, they're seeing it in the flesh and have plenty of experience.

Thanks TGB...tyre has only done 6500km thought I'd get a bit more. It is a deep cut and there are other marks/damage(?) Wear indicators looked OK to me. I did mean to get the fellas to check it. But funnily enough I just kept riding along. Monday, get on to that Monday. As it won't be funny if it fails.

it might be fine it might never get worse, but nothing is certain it might expload with a bad enough pot hole who lnows its down to you if you wana to risk it matey

Yeah better off just bringing it to get checked out. No need to replace it without getting it looked at. Have you gotten it looked at yet mate?

Going to do that today (Mon 5/3), been checking it pre ride and pressure, but the crew I go to will tell me straight. Will post what they recommend. Next thing if I have to change it, stay with Dunlop or move to Pirelli or Michelin.

Alright mate. Be careful on the road there if you choose to ride with a tear. And personally, I would either stick with the dunlop, or as a second option, I'd move to the Pirelli. I wouldn't go with the Michelin (Just a personal preference; no other reason).
