All the stuf about the Hero12 straight from GoPro theirself

One of the cons is they are backing off the claim of the 2x battery life.

At one point the engineer (the only guy over 40) says repeatedly it is "up to 2x" really hitting the up to part.

Then the field tester explains that when he was shooting he had several batteries ready for the shot so he could swap out as needed. He goes on to explain heat negatively affected the batteries.

Then at another point Ron Ng explains he shoots about a minute and half shots so 10 minute record time is great.

Now connecting the dots means a motovlogger on a ride longer than 10 minutes is going to get tired of stopping and swapping batteries or need an external battery source. Sorry "one take" filmers.

Now for a pro - the bluetooth recording of audio from a headset sounds like great feature! But we all know bluetooth is iffy when it comes to a headset connecting to a group ride and something else like an audio source.
Remember when GoPro had the backpack to the Hero4 that was Sena friendly? Ahead of its time.

I've not watched more than the first 15 min yet, will catch up on the rest when I have more time.

What is this 10 min recording time thing about? Currently I can record for around 1hr30min continuously and their stats in your following post state the 12 can do even longer at the settings I use?

Apparently the folks were going off the amount of time the files break into? I got a but lost because the engineer clearly knew his stuff. The other two guys seem to work within nailing a shot within 10 minutes so they do not have it split between files maybe? Mr. Ng was definitely describing short time shots.

So back to the engineer. He mentions there is a thermal time limit on the cameras. They will shut off when they reach a certain temp. Depending on res and frame rate that time limit may be lower than continuous battery run time that the company posts.

So far I have been spot checking the posted continuous run times between the 8 and the 12 and have not seen 2x battery life jump out at me yet. Still looking though.

Oh and for those that really know me "stuf" was intentionally used as a four letter word. You will see some in the video from GoPro.

Fun thing - Listen for the "fart" that got caught by a hot mic.

It def seemed like they wanted to not say it had 2x battery life as I don't think they could show it doing so from the stats you showed... unless that was in relation to the thermal cut off, so this one runs cooler so doesn't fry the battery as fast. Over in the UK on a motorcycle, I would have thought it rare our cameras would get hot enough unless absolutely maxed out on all the settings in the peak of summer in traffic. My Hero 10 has never overheated, my Hero 9 did, but I think that was after me doing a battery stamina test vs the Hero 8 indoors with no airflow on a bench.

That whole "up to 2x" thing only applies to the 5.3k/60... most of the rest are small improvements.

I'll be doing a battery run-down test in normal use. I'm not doing the thermal overload tests.

I do think it's funny how so many people concentrate on the overheating, when the majority of clips are shorter than 75 seconds and most people don't record static shots... which is the only time my Hero 9 and 10 have overheated. Outside of that, I strapped the 8, 9, and 10 to 2 bikes and rode for 3 hours last summer at 100F+ temps, and none of them overheated.

The increased battery life? That's more important, but then again, who actually is recording 5.3k/60 for that long in a static shot?

My Hero 8 overheats regularly if I film in 4K but only occasionally in 2.7K. Doesn't sound like GoPro has solved the overheating problem yet on their cameras, I had hoped by the Hero 12 it would no longer be any concern at all.

Is that on the bike, or while doing a talking head? I have only ever had my cameras overheat when sitting still in the sun - and then only in 4k.

TBH, I don't think they're all that concerned with it - it's only a minority of users that record long enough to overheat.

Also, my Sony ZV-1 will overheat, or go into thermal protection mode, after like 6 minutes of recording on my porch. On a tripod. Go figure.

My 8 overheated this weekend chest mounted walking around in the shade shooting 4k. It was windy and about 81°F on a newish battery. Only got 75% through the battery when it shutdown. I did not bother trying to swap the battery because...

The 360 was running full res 360 on a pole and had no problems. I went to do a battery swap and that battery was almost too hit to handle.

So thermal shutoff levels must be the internal battery temp and not what we can feel.

Wow, that sucks! The 8 must've been quite prone to overheating... I don't think I've ever shot 4k in it, outside of at night, and it was cool out.

My daytime recording has been limited to 2.7k, even when it's 100F+ out - and no overheating. I think the 4k is the kicker there - even worse if you're recording at 60fps.

I've always read that high FPS or high resolution can cause overheating on action cameras, and it's worse when you combine them.

My 9 overheats roughly 1/3 of my rides in 2.7k. Pretty much guaranteed to overheat if recording in 4k even on a cooler day in the 60s. I have considered reverting back to my hero 5 and just accepting its shortcomings as it was rock solid when it came to recording and never overheating. And I am hesitant to give GoPro anymore money as they just aren’t making me feel confident in their tech. Don’t get me started on how terrible their subscription service is. When Anthony, Lowell and myself were at Laconia I couldn’t get any of my footage to upload nor could I get the live stream to work and the wifi was great at out Airbnb.

Wow! Do you record at 30fps, or 60?

Well imagine riding while doing a multi camera shot and this problem happens...

That's exactly the issue I'm working through GoPro on with my Hero 12 - and I've mentioned it in both of my Hero 12 test/review videos.

I go through a lot more batteries right now!

-John

Do you mean less time recording per battery or recording more?
Neither, really... just burning through batteries faster. With the 9/10 setup I had, I could turn off the cameras in between recordings, but now I leave the 10/12 on all the time. They drain slowly but surely, leading to more battery swaps along the ride.

When I saw the work around suggestion I thought how that was a no go. Then I see GoPro lowered their proce for subscribers.

Sorry but pass until they get that remote straightened out.

Yeah, I paid $299 at preorder, really the $379.98 'cause I got a MLM 2.0.

I guess you haven't seen my vids yet on it - but the camera overall is really quite nice, and this is the only downside I've seen. Once they fix it, it'll be aces!
