Resolve - where does it save stuff - driving me crazy

OK ever since I changed computers Resolve has been making my life difficult.
(though that's really down to my comprehension level rather than Resolve itself)

I finally found my projects and (most of) the footage etc, and have put that all together in one directory with subdirectories.

I appear to have backups of things (projects?) in all kinds of weird places though.

@Drakhen99 and anyone else using Resolve - can you tell me how you've set up directories etc for saving your stuff in, and what locations you have set in resolve for the various backups/save locations?

Another question - How do you manage footage where you want to use the same video (but not necessarily the same portion of that video) in multiple projects?

My understanding is Resolve uses a database to store your projects in, it’s buried somewhere deep in your hard drive. You can export and import projects though.

where to keep things? Resolve doesn’t store your media in its database so any sort of folder structure that makes sense to you is fine with Resolve, if you add it to the media pool it can work with it.

One way to reuse footage is to setup what’s known as a Power Bin, which will enable you to share clips across projects

caveat: I'm still learning about resolve, myself ;-)

If you look under settings, system, media storage you can specify the drive locations resolve will use. Note that the first location in the list is where it will create cache and other files. I have set mine to a dedicated drive for video work.

Similarly under user, Project Save & Load is where you can set the project backup settings. I think by default it'll use the first drive from the previous list.

Although so far I only tend to use video in a single project, and thus store it in a dedicated folder, I am not aware of any reason why you can't just have a video source location and use it in any project you want?

Also if you're moving projects from one machine to another you could look at the functionality that allows you to create archives/exports which contain everything that project uses, I believe.

Cheers.

I have moved computers with resolve a couple of times. You want to do a backup/export of the database. Then, on the new PC import it. That will bring all your projects over. You will need to move the source clips separately.

If you move the clips to a different directory, it is no problem. When you open a project, the clips in the media bin will be red and unavailable. If you changed directories, you right click the clips and update the location to the new clip location.

Hope that helps, if you need more specific details, let me know and I can go into more details or a more involved step by step.

Sorry, I just saw this - thanks @Dewey316 !

Here's my setup:

Internal SSD: OS/Apps/Resolve
External SSD 1: Current Footage / Render Cache / Assets
External SSD 2: More Current Footage
External HDD 1: Rendered Videos / Backup of previous footage
External HDD 2: Thumbnails, image assets [memes, photos I took on my phone, etc.]

My "current footage" is projects I'm still editing, "previous footage" is completed project footage, in case I need some B Roll or whatever.

If you set it up this way, you should in theory be able to do a DB Backup in Resolve [Project Manager], copy that to the new computer, do a Restore DB, and go. If any files are missing after the move, you can go into the Project in Resolve and relink them or do a "change source folder" on the missing ones, but if your drive letters are the same, it should be fine.

I'll leave the thorough write-up to @Dewey316 though.
