The Art of the Dual Vlog

Following because I want to do some dual vlogs too!

I have watched a few of them, and I think they're recording their own headset communicators to get both voices in. Yammie Noob does this a lot when he and Spite take a ride together. They sync up their audio - probably the clap method - and then switch viewpoints and such to show who's talking.

Any of their recent videos with rides in them show this.

As for myself, I did a pseudo-dual vlog with another local moto vlogger, but we didn't share footage, just the ride - we social distanced the whole time, only getting close enough to elbow bump once. We each edited our own footage and cut it into videos for our channels. I used 2 cams and 1 picked him up when he was on my left, so it made for some interesting stoplight footage. [this whole thing is shown in my Brighton Dam video]

I was going to try this on my ride this weekend, bit the weather isn't playing nice. Our plan was to each record and share footage, when I get a chance to do it, I'll let you know how it works out.

Awesome! Looking forward to it!

It all depends on the other person. I have one that lost their footage. Then many more that were great about collaboration and sharing files. Also, are doing the dual vlog in person or virtual?
Hoping to do one in person in March or April. But also curious about a virtual one, I am not sure how a Virtual one would work at all but sounds interesting.

Sounds cool John. I'll have to check out your Brighton video again for that Dual Vlog part. For sharing footage I'm totally down with that. I even have a ftp server where we can drop files to share and vise versa.

Sounds good Dewey, looking forward to it.

Basically it was any part where my buddy and I were side-by-side, having a conversation. My mic [in my helmet] picked up his voice pretty well, so I had both sides of those conversations.

Side note: Apparently, with my bike off, someone can be standing 10 or so feet away and still get picked up clearly. I have to boost the audio volume if they're that far away, but it makes for great video [IMHO]! Also, my wife's voice when she's called and I'm recording... well, it sometimes gets picked up by the mic, even though the SENA speaker is like 1.5" away from my mic.

Oh, go it John. A Dual Vlog in the sense that when you are next to each other you your both on camera but not a full out back and forth Dual Vlog like Chaseontwowheels and Yummi. That's cool that your mic got both conversations, better than nothing.

Would be cool someday to do a virtual Dual Vlog somehow, how do you think we could pull that off? :)

Yeah, what Dewey said... would be weird though, can you imagine?

Rider 1: "Hey, check out that rare car that I'm driving by!"
Rider 2: "What car? Oh hey, check out this puppy running loose by the road!"
R1: "Wait, what?"
R2: "Never mind, it was a skunk."

...

But yeah, dual vlogs usually have connected comms and are riding together, and I haven't done that yet. It's on my goals for 2021 though... and since the other rider in my Brighton Dam video didn't have a comms system, it wasn't happening then.

-John

With a comms system, it could be done over a phone call. Just the same as talking to someone over a comms system.
A remote phone call would be an interesting idea, I don't think I have seen a YouTube video do that yet. A Dual VLog telecommute where both people are riding in different places. And if its international maybe we could use a free chat app like the LINE app.

Just remember, if you're gonna do it, you gotta find a way to both record the 2nd person and sync the audio for later.

You can do this by placing your mic very close to your comms speaker, or by clapping on both ends and recording the phone audio into an app [I used Parrot to record my own voice over bluetooth one time while vlogging].

This might be worth looking into. I'd be willing to give it a shot once the weather clears up. Heck, I can sit at my computer one night and do testing - duh, just wear your helmet and make vroom vroom noises!

Why not try clapping a few times to sync the audio, then both parties share their footage for each person to edit. Then you can have two feeds where you could go back and forth between for the final product.
