Do you believe there is a sweet spot for vlog length ?

City Bob makes a great point. If the video is really long, and you don't want to put it under the big editing chopping block, go ahead and make it a multi-part video.
Yes, if the subject is worth a 2 parter i also tend to use this strategy ;)

I notice if there is a really long video I want to watch from a channel I subscribe too, I may put off watching it until later when I have more time. But that extra time may not come right away, so that video I want to watch gets put off even further down the road.
Similar problem, still fighting to finish off the second podcast of Teapotone due to length and time.

On another note for YouTube (YT) advertising purposes shoot for at least 10:01. That is the magic number (at time of this writing) where YT allows you to run multiple ads in your video, where You and YT could potentially make more money from ad revenue.
Also true, but i hate the midroll advertisements. Some channels tend to put one in every 5 minutes or so.
Skip that content, or back to AdBlock it is then.

I have the midroll adds off as standard.
Only put them on for reviews for example, and only 1 max. , as those are the video's that are mainly watched by none-subscribers and are the most time, money and energy taken once ;)

That is a good ad strategy! Don't know what I would do since I can't advertise but it would be nice to put ads on similar videos where I had to make purchases of things for unboxings and reviews.

I think is more about what keeps people watching more than anything. Looking back over my most viewed videos there is no coloration between views and length, its all about the content.
My most viewed video is just under 10 mins, then there are a couple that are only 2-3 mins.

I try to keep most of mine around the 5 min mark as even I don't want to listen to myself for much longer than that.

The 'Lock-Picking Lawyer ' on YT most of his videos are around 3 minutes. I'll bet he gets about a 97% watch time

But whether that's of any use from a monetization POV I wouldn't know.

If you have youtube premium, you dont get ads. Although i also have an ad blocker. (I have YT premium because I use the Play music (which is becoming YT music)

Thats just because it only takes him a few seconds to break into a lock! :D I'm guessing his videos would take longer if he wasnt so dam quick at getting into them! .. so worrying!

I think it is a YMMV situation though too, and who is your audience. Many people are strapped for time, so the shorter the video is, the sooner I think that person will have time to watch it.

Yeah, and it prevents people from skipping your vid's because of all the adds as well ;)

OP how many watches are your videos getting on average., Because if its only a relatively small number then the statistics aren't really going to tell you much useful / accurate.

Bigger sample size = more reliable stats.

The perfect example of this is The "lock picking lawyer". Most of his videos are around 3 minutes and he drops 3 or 4 a week I think. I reckon he'd get close to 100% of each video watched but because of overall length the TOTAL watch time might be low. Then again if it attracts more viewers, it might not be too.

I usually have a topic or two that I want to talk about while I ride, and I try to pick the most scenic or interesting roads/parts of roads to film my speaking segments on, and cut the rest.

Then I go back and view it, and if I can't answer the question, "Would someone else find this scene interesting?" then it too gets cut.

I usually end up at 8-12 minutes in length, but I don't edit to length, I edit to content, and screw the rest. If it's 25 minutes long, but stays engaging the whole time, then that's what it is. If even I get bored while watching my own video, it's either binned or back to the editor for more slicing & dicing until it's right.

Right now I've got about 5 videos like that in my editor. They're either way too long for my liking, and thus I get bored watching them, or they've been superseded by other videos I've filmed and are editing/have edited.

I struggle with this too. I have often thought my videos need to be shorter, but because I like the content I let it babble on. I feel that I need more peronal interaction with the audience, something that I struggle with. Practice surely will aid in making hear my voice easier.

Content is king. Along with that you also have to realize maybe you haven’t found your target audience yet. I’ve seen people with hour long videos who get tons of views and short videos that get none.

So first off I am keen for video challenge as suggested by @HippoDrone .
Secondly I find unless it's a touring video I like videos around the 10 min mark. 50% watch time is great, you can try putting we teasers in that get revealed at the end but that depends on your content. Not something I have ever done.

Yes, practice helps ... and I'm still working on my audience interaction.

My videos get a few likes, a few views, but very little engagement. I think Hippo-Drones is my #1 commenter on my videos :D

I am going to make it my aim this annual leave period to steal that title from him

Haha awesome!

It must be YOU who is watching all my videos in the last 24 hours. I saw a dip for a day, and then BOOM, twice as many hits in the next 24 hour period LOL.

That's a good example! I was in an editing slump, and started to edit videos down to just the speaking parts and that has taken my videos from +10minutes down to that 2-5 minute range. And makes them kind of funny too.

Funny, that's where my editing started - showing only the beautiful scenery and the talking parts.

Now that I have a dual cam setup, there will be *somewhat* more non-speaking scenes to break up the speech, since you can make videos more engaging by switching camera angles, right?
