i see. i film a lot in the canyons. i dont really use it for up close shots or anything

The wider you go, the most stuff you can see, and the faster things look...but a lot of people use linear mode as they don't like the fisheye effect which makes everything look warped.

It's a fixed lens, the different modes just crop the sensor in different ways, so the minimum focal length won't change between modes.

superview looks like you're travelling faster, but wide mode looks a lot more dramatic, not as smooth but much more in the action

ah. yeah i wanna stay filming in 4k/30fps, it just looks so good. i guess i can try superview, sounds interesting. I will also be playing with my gopro max when i get it on my handlebar mount so that should be cool.

I just use wide, 1080p 60fps. Sometimes superview, shows more of the dash and handles/lever operation but if you ride with others you can't get a lot of detail of them since they look tiny or far away.

Record in 2.7k. It'll up the bitrate so once you downscale to 1080p the footage will have more detail

@WEB have you experimented with YouTubes compression of 1080 vs 2.7k/4k? They use a different codec for the 2.7k/4k to 1080 and it makes a world of difference to how it looks after YouTube has got their grubby mits on it!

I've used both Wide and Superwide on my Hero 8 and I've gone back and forth on the two, and while I do like the Superwide view it just makes everything on the road in front of you look so tiny by comparison. I prefer Wide mode as it feels more personal and in the moment.

I'm sticking with Wide mode for now.

naw, not at all - the only thing I have that does 4K without a crop is the GoPro so I master everything at 1080. i'll give it a go, I just don't know how it'll handle a 1080 stream mastered at 4K then display it at 1080p again? only one way to find out I suppose

I actually record at 1080 even with my Hero 8 too, (although my current off bike vids have been full 4K). What I've found is if I upscale the 1080 to 4k when rendering after editing and keep the raw bitrate, I can trick YouTube into thinking it is actually a real 4k video, that gets me the VP9 codec which stops YouTube compressing the videos so I get the full bitrate on playback even when the viewer watches at 1080, means going through trees etc looks a wedge better.
Larger YouTubers seem to get the VP9 codec even on their 1080 videos, us small channels have to use trickery though.
