So I recently got myself the AGV Pista GP helmet, which was on my wishlist ever since it's introduction, never could get past the price tag but so happens they had a good deal going on, plus it was the fully plain version (no VR46 yeah!), with a free extra visor included in the deal.. So enough about that.

As the topic suggests, I'm in the midst of making a custom "v" shaped mount for the chin of this helmet, because it's chin is quite sharp, and I didn't want to use the usual 3M curved mounts and sort of destroy the looks of it too much. And if you see how others apply it such as on top of helmet or on the side, that just won't do for me, I don't like those angles much.

Actually I'm not the one personally making it (my friend is), the mount itself will be aluminium, stuck onto the chin using 3M, and the adapter will be the tripod male bolt/thread. Prototype will be just raw aluminium probably covered by matte black sticker, but in future final versions will most likely anodized or powder coated for a nicer look.

Some pics for starters, will try to update the thread as the progress goes.

Are you going to paint it to match the helmet or leave it in metal? Looks a great idea so far!

Thanks. For the prototype it will most likely be wrapped up with matte black sticker, or Plasti-Dip black to match the helmet, the screw stub will remain metal finish for tolerance purposes.. Personally I would prefer to have it all anodized in black but it's costly to just anodized one little piece like this.

Almost done, probably needs another extension/arm cause the angle needs to be tilted more for sporty riding position.. And making some low profile smaller screws to replace the standard GoPro ones to reduce weight and more low profile look without all the plastic screw heads sticking out.

The main drawback with this center chin bar position, is that the camera when tilted for recording blocks the visor opening button/tab so to open the visor need to push the camera downwards to gain access to the button/tab. Not a really big deal just need to make sure one of the screw is not dead tight to allow the camera to be push in/out of place for visor access.

Another concern is that I started to make the mount before testing the helmet, once I tested the helmet (without the mount), I notice that this helmet is pretty damn noisy, so I don't know how the external microphone audio will be like when installed into the helmet.. Hopefully not too terrible with wind noise.

That's pretty much it for potential issues that I can see.

Probably have to do some test setup for the angle, and the other pic will be the screw I will use to replace the GoPro ones, no more finger twisting adjustments once the position is right I will lock it down with the Phillip's screwdriver, only 1 screw that holds the camera to the mount will remain as the GoPro one, so that I can still loosen it by hand, as it will be blocking the visor open button.

It looks good, but won't that bolt be a safety hazard if you happen to fall? You could have just went with Sugru, like many of us weirdly shaped helmet owners.
I have Sugru, but I think it will just be a mess to use and mount the flat/curved GoPro base, I don't think it's any different in terms of safety hazard if compared to using Sugru to mount it on or the custom one I have done, in a fall I expect the plastics would probably break, and maybe the screw tip, depending on the force of impact, otherwise the base itself being aluminium should in a sense provide added protection to the chin? Can't say for sure.

Did some initial runs, nothing crazy high speed yet, so far the mic placement is a plug and play transfer off my Shoei XR-1100 directly into the Pista, center point behind the chin bar. Audio is pretty decent, was expecting a lot of noise since this is a noisy helmet, need to try some higher speed runs like 180 km/h and up while talking to see how the audio is (at that speed without ear plugs I can't even hear myself talk in the helmet).

I'm sure if you hit the road with that screw sticking out it's going to sheer off, I wouldn't think it's too much of a safety concern.

Looks good man, looks like a pretty clean install. Is that metal bracket stuck on with adhesive? I'm looking for another idea about mounting my Sony up the side. The skeleton case it comes with is starting to get pretty fatigued and flimsy. Causes a lot of vibration.

Thanks! Yup, I believe the camera attachment and etc will easily snap that screw bit off in case of a hard impact. Yup the aluminium piece is stuck onto the helmet with acrylic double sided adhesive tape.
