How Do You Catalouge/organise Your Footage?

I have been thinking how should I organise my footage for later use.

As we would all know you can't put all your footage into one video and there may be bits you want to use in a later video.

What does everyone do with theirs?

I place all my source footage in a folder within the project folder for each video.
Excess footage I put in a seperate folder called "stock footage" and I label them so they are easy to remember later on.

However, a lot of the unused footage lose its meaning without the context of the intended vlog. Unless its more eventfull and random. Which is rare for me. So I don't have much I can use later when I'm done.

I generally just edit the video down to the part I need for the particular vlog I'm making. Then after editing and view checking the final video before upload I delete the video files.

I suppose if something out of the ordinary happened during recording the video then I might keep some part of the original file for use later. But it hasn't happened so far.

1. Record video onto 8GB card
2. take card out of gopro
3. put card into laptop
4. Export onto HDD as dated folder
5. open vegas pro
6. edit footage
7. export
8. upload to youtube
9. ??????
10. profit

I think my issues start at not know what step 9 is as well. Any insights? :p

I import my recordings into Topic : Date - I do offroad video as well as motovlog. This keeps it pretty organized, but I do end up deleting the originals and cleanup any rendered files too, after a bit. With that said, I'm doing closer to hour vids currently, so keeping 10 of them or so really adds up in space...

Put some brief description in your source filename i.e. YYMMDD-TIMESTAMP-TITLE so you know what you want from that file next time, especially for compilation type video. i.e. 20160830-0130-Almost got hit by cager.

If you have the time you can immediately crop and render that part you want as a new (smaller) video, keep that and bin the raw (huge) source file.

I don't usually keep the raw or rendered videos that I have used/uploaded as I don't have lots of HDD space.

I've been thinking about this... review your new video footage, then save a text file in the same directory with the video, where you've noted highlights plus the time, where the event can be found (for editing later).

But you'd need one massive NAS to keep all these videos. Especially if you are a video hoarder ! :D
