Drones

I've thought of trying it out but I don't have a high end drone and camera so it would probably look rubbish.

A while back someone posted on here a drone that was set to follow a wireless transmitter in a wrist band. Looked hella cool but it was like thousands of dollars and could only go like 20mph. If they made one that could go highway speed and a reasonable price, I would totally do it.

I know eveRide has used one for some of his vids. Riding offroad means slower speeds. I'm sure there's more out there and they probably have 'drone' and 'motovlog' in the title or tags.

I've seen people use them for little cinematic clips and intros. The DJI Phantom 3 will follow its controller if set up correctly and will fly at a specified height and distance. Pretty cool but really only useful at low speeds for creative work.

Batteries on drones don't last more than about 25min on average so one following you on the highway would never really work it would just die and crash.

Well, depending on the drone and the laws in the country regarding drones, but like most users posted now, they won't be able to keep up with the bike for it's too slow, the battery life only lasts 23-25 mins, as well as if you get a drone with a good enough camera it will cost you an arm and a leg.

But again, the DJI Phantom 3 Standard, Advance and Pro have a follow function, so that can be cool for intro videos and short clips, but nothing more really.

So if you really wanted to yeah, you can use it, but it will not be worth it at all.

I had a phantom one and then a vision and they can shift!

In the UK, you are restricted to open places, not near roads blah blah

The laws are getting tighter and tighter so it's not really worth using them now. You can upload to YouTube but you break one law, you'll get emailed and warned etc. If you have adverts on the videos or not licences to fly one (due to taking payment from adverts) the you can get fined

The more people exercise their stupidity while using drones the tighter the laws will get.

Plus I think it's great for an effect, and not a continuous use thing.

We were looking at getting a drone actually to film parts of the Hartside pass. Just keeping the drone stationary above some corners for a birds eye view is all we wanted but it's the battery life that lets them down. Ones we were looking at only had about 10 mins of flight time which really isn't enough.

Some brief drone footage from a meetup I attended.

Go to 0:40 and 2:10 if you don't want to watch all of it.
