Youtube Noob Questions

Hey guys! Had a few questions regarding YouTube content, stuff that doesn't seem to be quite clear unless you read through 156 pages of terms & conditions.
  • What happens if someone uses my content in a compilation video?
  • What happens if I use another's content in my own compilation video?
  • What happens if we use multiple tracks (some free and some copyrighted 5-6 songs) in one clip?
  • Can you be penalized (like Google does with blackhat seo) - anything a vlogger should be weary of?
I'm just trying to make a perfect account, don't want to screw it up in the beginning.

I've posted videos in the past with copyright music and the claimant monetised my video and stopped me being able to do so. It also wouldn't play in some countries so narrows your viewer base.
As for using other people's clips, the best policy would be to get their permission first in writing.

  • What happens if someone uses my content in a compilation video?
Nothing happens. If you so happen to know about it and it's not done with your permission, you can try to file a copyright claim on it through YT.
  • What happens if I use another's content in my own compilation video?
If it's not registered as copyright material with YT (usually only in the case of property belonging to big companies), nothing happens. If it is, then YT will autoflag your content. Or the owner could just flag your video manually anyway.
  • What happens if we use multiple tracks (some free and some copyrighted 5-6 songs) in one clip?
Your video automatically gets a copyright claim and you cannot monetize it. If there is only one claim, that sole claimant gets full say in how the video's monetization works and the regional views. But Jim Sterling found out if you make a video that causes multiple competing claims, you cannot monetize the video, but none of the claimants get to monetize it as well, and the video remains open to all regions.
  • Can you be penalized (like Google does with blackhat seo) - anything a vlogger should be weary of?
If you continuously use copyright material that does not fall under fair use, and draw copyright strikes from copyright holders, 3 times and your channel is closed, forever. Each strike before 3 severely limits what you can do with your channel as well, so having even one strike is kind of detrimental. But then again, this is fairly rare.

  • What happens if someone uses my content in a compilation video?
  • If they do it without your consent, you may report it to YT for it to be taken down.
  • What happens if I use another's content in my own compilation video?
  • Same as above, just opposite.
  • What happens if we use multiple tracks (some free and some copyrighted 5-6 songs) in one clip?
  • If YT detects the copyrighted song, there may be a claim made on the entire video, and monetization will be disabled for that video.
  • Can you be penalized (like Google does with blackhat seo) - anything a vlogger should be weary of?
  • If you rip content off others without permission, misuse copyrighted material, make racial/hate/etc videos which person report to YT, then YT will take action.

Answers are in orange. Basically just try to stick to making your own clean content (some cursing is fine, not overly excessive) and try to avoid using any copyrighted content or content created by others. Yes you can request for permission but I prefer to just stay off from using them to make life easier. YT has way too much to handle to check on each and every single video but they have some algorithms that can scan or detect some of the copyright content, so it's better not to risk it.
